Title: Gov't gets failing marks on fighting inflation, poverty
Post by: Zurca on October 09, 2014, 05:52:04 PM
MANILA - Filipinos gave the Aquino administration failing marks in handling concerns most urgent to them including controlling inflation, reducing poverty and increasing salaries, a Pulse Asia survey revealed Thursday.

The Aquino administration posted a net approval rating of -24 in curbing inflation, -13 in reducing poverty and -8 in increasing the pay of workers.

It had low approval ratings in creating jobs (+5), controlling population growth (+8), fighting graft and corruption in government (+17), and enforcing the rule of law on all (+22%).

This is amid the context of non-inclusive economic growth, the delayed implementation of the Reproductive Health Law and the absence of corruption cases filed against administration allies.

A total of 1,200 respondents participated in the survey, which was conducted from September 8-15. News during the survey period include the ongoing investigation on the alleged overpricing of the Makati City Hall Building 2, the junking of the impeachment complaints against President Aquino, the suspension of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile and calls for the resignation of Philippine National Police chief Alan Purisima.

According to the survey, controlling inflation was the most urgent concern of most Filipinos polled at 50%. This is followed by increasing the pay of workers (49%), fighting graft and corruption (41%), creating more jobs (38%), reducing poverty (35%), fighting criminality (25%), enforcing the law on all (15%), improving peace (12%), controlling fast population growth (12%), stopping the destruction of the environment (12%), changing the Constitution (6%) and defending the territory against foreigners (5%).

The Aquino administration posted its highest approval ratings in fighting criminality (+35), defending Philippine territory (+29), increasing peace in the country (+28) and stopping the destruction of the environment (+23).

This is amid the government's ongoing territorial row with China and delays in the passage of the Bangsamoro basic law, seen as key to implementing a landmark peace deal with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front inked last March.

Public assessment of the administration’s performance is virtually unchanged during the period June to September 2014.
