King Eagle: Ateneo star Kiefer Ravena named UAAP MVP
Ateneo star Kiefer Ravena is set to win his first Most Valuable Player award after leading all players in statistical points in UAAP Season 77, the league announced on Wednesday.
Ravena garnered a total of 77.64 SPs to top all players. In 14 games, he collected 297 points, 83 rebounds, 78 assists, 21 steals and earned 165 bonus points for leading the Blue Eagles to a league-best 11-3 card which helped them book a twice-to-beat advantage in their return to the final four.
Trailing him is La Salle’s Jeron Teng (68.2), Far Eastern University’s Mac Belo (61.3), Ateneo’s Chris Newsome (60.64) and University of Santo Tomas’ Karim Abdul (57.62).

Ravena will officially hoist his MVP trophy at the UAAP awarding ceremonies on October 8.

Ateneo’s overtime win stands after UAAP junks FEU’s protest
UAAP commissioner Andy Jao on Tuesday upheld Ateneo’s 68-64 overtime victory over Far Eastern University last Saturday despite the protest from the Tamaraws side about a “grave error” which happened in the crucial moments of the game.
FEU coach Nash Racela last Monday wrote a letter to the UAAP board questioning the decision of officials to convert Von Pessumal’s two-point shot into a three-pointer at the 3:20 mark of the fourth quarter. He said that a shot review shouldn’t be allowed during that juncture, as it should only be done at the “first dead ball opportunity” after the shot.
Referees upgraded the basket four dead ball possessions after Pessumal made the basket, Racela said.
However, Jao said that the shot was a clear three-pointer and even asked the officials to upgrade it right after the basket was made.
“First thing we have to clear, that three point shot is a three point shot. The scorer didn’t put it as three points because he could not see the situation,” Jao said in a television interview. “We knew it from our table that we have to correct it as soon as possible.
“From the very start when the scorer missed it, we were calling the attention of the referees.”
Jao said that he wasn’t able to tell the referees immediately about the scorer’s error because his seat at the venue made it difficult for him to catch their attention.
Jao added that according to the rules, a shot can also be corrected at the first timeout after the shot in question or before the end of the period concerned. Pessumal’s basket was upgraded with just 27 seconds left in the game.
“We have to correct this before the end of the period for it to be valid. I put that point because there are three instances for this to be corrected. We were not trying to correct it immediately,” Jao said.
“I see a lot of games where a lot of shots could not be corrected on the first dead ball possession. My belief is there can be no technicality because everything that we did was within the rulebook.”
Jao said that he has already informed the FEU management about his decision.
“I’m telling them that the victory will be upheld, we cannot penalize the team on something that is correct,” Jao said. “We knew we were going to correct it, it’s just that at that period, that was the only time that the refs came to us to acknowledge the fact that we should correct the two-point shot into three points.”
In that game, FEU blew a 19-point lead and allowed Ateneo to complete its comeback with an overtime victory.
With the loss, FEU also missed a chance to clinch the top spot. The Tamaraws will face La Salle on Sunday to contest the last twice-to-beat advantage in the final four.

Dominant San Beda trounces Lyceum to book final four ticket
Defending champion San Beda used a strong second half to thrash Lyceum, 76-60, in NCAA Season 90 action Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Art Dela Cruz scored 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the top-seed Red Lions (13-2) to their ninth straight final four appearance.
The Red Lions were just ahead by seven, 35-28, after the second period where prized center Ola Adeogun lost his cool. The big man incidentally elbowed Rhoel Maconocido, who suffered a boxer’s cut on his eyebrow, in a play.
Visibly frustrated, Adeogun then lost his temper and got slapped with an unsportsmanlike foul and a technical in succession before the quarter ended.
Adeogun sat the third period, where Baser Amer and Art Dela Cruz took charge and led a 16-5 run that gave the Red Lions their biggest lead at 18 points in the third quarter.
The Pirates tried to mount a comeback, trimming their deficit to 11 with over three minutes remaining in the game. But Adeogun scored a layup to stop Lyceum’s momentum as San Beda came away with the win.
The loss dashed the hopes of a final four trip for Lyceum (6-9) which remained at the seventh spot.

The Rookie of the Year is a man on a mission
MANILA, Philippines - On a hot summer afternoon a few months ago, Arvin Tolentino made a claim. While taking sips from a cold Frappucino in the middle of Manila's unforgiving noon-time weather, the then soon-to-be Ateneo rookie didn't lack confidence as he shared to Rappler: "We can be champions this year."
He then sat back and put his drink down and started in on a piece of cheesecake following a tiresome practice session with his new teammates. Not many pundits expected Ateneo to rise up so quickly from the ashes with a cast comprised mostly of rookies, albeit high school all-stars. Some even had them missing the Final Four. But Tolentino didn't mind that; he was confident nonetheless.
He talked about how Kiefer Ravena would come back with a vengeance after spending most of 2013 hobbled by an ankle injury. He talked about how Chris Newsome would take many by surprise and become one of the best the UAAP has to offer. He talked about how he believed in Coach Bo Perasol's principles, saying he had faith it would give an Ateneo team that missed the Final Four a year prior an opportunity to reclaim lost glory.
"Nothing is impossible. With our talent, us rookies, there's so much potential. Compare us to the rookies of other teams," he said in Filipino.
He was right. In 2014, Ravena came back with a vengeance by winning the UAAP MVP award after dominating the statistical points race (77.64). Newsome came in fourth place (60.64), which warrants a spot for him in the Mythical 5 team. Perasol hasn't been perfect, but he's helped spearhead the Blue Eagles to an 11-3 record while becoming the mentor they need off the court.
"Sobrang bait niya. Father figure talaga si Coach Bo saamin eh. Hindi lang siya coach - kuya, tatay, lahat na eh. Siya na yung tatay sa team. Yung pag mo-motivate niya saamin, ibang klase talaga eh." Tolentino boasted about his mentor in an interview with Rappler on Thursday, September 18.
(Coach Bo is really nice. He's a father figure to us all. He's not just a coach. He's an elder brother, father, everything. He's the father of the team. The way he motivates us, it's really something.)
He was also right about Ateneo's cast of rookies having so much potential. He displayed as much all throughout the elimination round of the 2014 UAAP men's basketball tournament. And for his efforts, he'll receive an award to add to his already crowded mantle soon. The same award given to Ravena and many other great UAAP stars in the past received in their rookie seasons.
"Masaya naman, masaya ako sa na-achieve ko," promised Tolentino, who is Season 77's Rookie of the Year after averaging 8 PPG, 5 RPG, and compiling 40.21 statistical points. "Syempre kung baga motivation saakin yun. Dapat makapag contribute ako sa team ko.
(I'm happy with what I achieved. Of course, it gives me even more motivation. I should be able to contribute to my team.)
But as happy as Tolentino is with winning ROY, he prefers to win another trophy. The kind that is given to the best team in the UAAP each season after they become the last ones standing.
"Yung mga individual award, parang bonus lang 'to eh. Hindi talaga ito yung target ko eh, yung target ko yung championship," a motivated Tolentino told Rappler. "To be honest, wala talaga eh. I'm not into individual awards. Gusto ko lang talaga mag champion."
(Individual awards are just a bonus. This really isn't my target; I want a championship. To be honest, I'm not into individual awards. I really want to be a champion.)
WInning championships isn't foreign to Tolentino, who won a title in each of his last three high school seasons with the San Beda Red Cubs. Like those dominant Jr. San Beda teams, the Blue Eagles are in possession of the top seed in the league standings following the elimination round, providing extra motivation for Ateneo to get the job done.
"Yung number one, motivation saakin yun. Kasi, number one kami, so kailangan maganda yung laro namin," the young stalwart said.
(The number one seed is motivation for me. Because, of course, we're no. 1, so we need to play well.)
"Sobrang dami na naming sacrifice at hard work para makarating dito sa number one. So hindi na dapat mawala saamin yun. Binigay na kami nang chance. Nandito na kami so I gra-grab nalang namin yung opportunity and ibibigay namin ang lahat para makapag champion ulit."
(We've had to sacrifice so much and give a lot of hard work to get to where we are now. So we shouldn't give it up. We were given a great chance. We're here so we're going to grab the opportunity to become champions again.)
From 2008-2012, Ateneo was the undisputed ruler of the UAAP (men's basketball). They won five straight titles, a feat that hasn't been accomplished by any other team since the implementation of the UAAP Final Four format 20 years ago.
But in 2013, the Blue Eagles failed to defend their title as Ravena crawled to the finish line with his ankle hindering his play. Ateneo didn't even make it to the Final Four round, as they lost to UST in a playoff for the no. 4 seed.
What they felt at the end of their campaign last season will be a similar feeling either the UE Red Warriors or NU Bulldogs will go through on Saturday, September 20. Both clubs are scheduled to battle in a tiebreaker for the last Final Four seed, and the right to face the Blue Eagles, who will have a twice-to-beat advantage.
"Saamin kung sino lang yung deserving or sino makakatapat saamin, sige, go kami. Wala naman kaming reklamo duon," Tolentino mentioned his team doesn't have a preference on whom they'd rather face.
(Whoever wins, we'll be ready for them. We won't have any complaints.)
During the elimination round, two of ADMU's three defeats came at the hands of NU, which hasn't lost to the Blue Eagles in the past two years. UE fell to Ateneo on both occasions this past elimination round, though they've won four straight and six out of their last seven games, making them the hottest club in the UAAP right now.
"Para saakin, kahit sino. Basta ibibigay namin yung best namin kahit sino yung kalaban namin," the willful Rookie of the Year claimed.
(For me, it can be any of the two, because we'll still give our best regardless of whom we face.)
Part of the reason why Tolentino believes they're capable of beating anyone is because of the team's overall talent and ability to come back from any deficit - the latter a feeling UE and the FEU Tamaraws know too well.
The Blue Eagles have shown the capacity to rally back despite facing huge leads because of the clutch play of their now-healthy star, who'll receive his individual plum the same day Tolentino receives his.
"Si Kief talaga, sobrang laking factor sa team namin," Tolentino praised his teammate. "Hindi lang as a scorer - as a passer, as a rebounder. Pero yung leadership na nabibigay niya sa team, kasi, sobrang lakas eh. Silang dalawa ni Newsome. Iba yung team kapag nandiyan si Kief."
(Kief's a huge factor for our team. He's not just a scorer. He's a passer and a rebounder too. But the leadership he brings, it really resonates. Both him and Newsome. The team is different when Kiefer is around.)
"Sobrang nakatulong sila," he went on, also referring to Newsome. "Pag kailangan ko nang tulong, lagi lang sila nandiyan. Lalo na pag nawawala ako or pag pangit yung laro ko. Lagi nila akong pinupush eh."
(They really help. When I need help, they're always there. Especially when I'm lost or when I'm not playing to well. They're always pushing me.)
Winning a title for Ravena and Newsome - the latter of whom is in his final season - is a personal mission for Tolentino as he looks to give back to those who have helped guide him in his rookie campaign. And also for Coach Perasol, whose doubters will be ready with their pitchforks if ever Ateneo gets eliminated.
"Itong sobrang special talaga kung mag cha-champion kami. Lalo na sa mga senior namin. And kay Coach Bo, syempre, sa mga doubters."
(Winning a championship would be really special, especially for our seniors. And for Coach Bo because of his doubters.)
But most of all, Tolentino wants to win the championship for the people who have welcomed and embraced him with open arms ever since he started his college career in Loyola Heights.
"We promise sa Ateneo Community na gagawin namin lahat para mabalik yung championship sa Katipunan."
(We promise to the Ateneo Community that we'll do everything to bring the championship back to Katipunan.)
With the Rookie of the Year award already in bag, Arvin Tolentino is on a mission for another, bigger prize at stake.

NU knocks out Roi Sumang, UE to punch last final four ticket
National University needed to escape Roi Sumang and a gritty University of the East squad to escape with a 51-49 victory and book the last final four berth in UAAP Season 77 Saturday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
The Bulldogs had to weather a late fightback by the Red Warriors led by Sumang, who scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, and a potential game-winner by Bong Galanza before grabbing that last spot in the playoffs.
NU was able to grab a commanding 40-31 early in the fourth period in a low-scoring affair.
But UE slowly came back, with Sumang leading the charge and keeping the Red Warriors within striking distance.
Hanging on to a 45-42 lead, the Bulldogs, however, kept on making crucial baskets down the stretch. Glenn Khobuntin drained a jumper, while Alfred Aroga sank a layup to give NU a 49-42 lead with 3:16 remaining.
Sumang then converted a fastbreak layup and-one to tow UE within four, 49-45, with over two minutes left.
After an NU turnover, Sumang faced up for a triple to keep UE just down by one point, 49-48, with 1:16 left.
The Bulldogs lost the ball again after a timeout, opening the door anew for the Red Warriors. Sumang missed a triple, but UE got the ball back and Chris Javier was able to fish a foul from Troy Rosario with 36.6 seconds left.
Javier made a split from the line to tie the game at 49-all.
Rev Diputado missed an open jumper for NU, but the Bulldogs got a break when Paul Varilla got trapped on the baseline and was caught making extra steps.
Aroga then fished a foul from Charles Mammie and made two pressure-packed free throws with 12.4 seconds remaining to give NU back the lead, 51-49.
UE had one last chance to take the win. Galanza then faked his shot and found himself open from beyond-the-arc, but his shot clanked off the rim as NU escaped with the win.
Khobuntin scored 12 points and six rebounds to lead NU, which will face top-seed Ateneo in the final four. The Bulldogs swept the Blue Eagles during the elimination round.
Sumang scored 19 points and four steals as UE fell short of making it to the playoffs.

Tams edge out Archers, gain twice-to-beat incentive
September 21, 2014
MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University unleashed another gear in the clutch moments of the game to thwart a gritty DLSU side, 65-60, to take the No. 2 semis spot and the twice-to-beat edge that comes with it in the 77th UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena Sunday.
Carl Cruz caught the break of the game when he was left alone during a broken play, which instead turned into a golden 3-point play opportunity that gave the Tamaraws a 63-60 lead with 22 ticks left.
Almond Vosotros had a chance to tie the game but missed on a wide-open triple and Jeron Teng fouled Mike Tolomia, who split his free throws to giving put FEU further ahead, 64-60, with 7.7 seconds left.
The Archers failed to convert in the next possession, leading to another foul. Cruz then sealed the deal by splitting his free throws for the final score.
"It was really hard coming off that loss to Ateneo today. It just showed the character of the team. Sabi namin if you want to succeed in life you have to persevere. It wasn't really easy to beat La Salle," said FEU coach Nash Racela.
Despite the win, Racela was quick to douse the celebration and hinged on the things they still need to accomplish.
"We haven't achieved anything yet that's why I had to talk to them not to celebrate too much. Malayo pa kami. We still need another win for us to get to the finals. Dapat low key lang tayo, wala pa tayong nararating," he said.
Tolomia paced the Tamaraws in the scoring department with 19 points while Mac Belo added a double-double effort of 15 markers and 10 boards for the Morayta-based squad, which is one win away from the Finals.
"Natatawa na ako sa sarili ko. Grabe yung pagsubok na binibigay sakin, ang bilis kaya thankful ako kay God sa opportunity na binigay sakin na makabawi agad," said Tolomia, who talked about his two missed free throws that spelled the difference in their loss to Ateneo.
"Two years na sila nagtatanggal sa amin so parang simula pa lang ng season, sila na ang pinaghahandaan ko," said Tolomia of his added motivation against La Salle.
Jason Perkins led the Archers with 15 points while Vosotros fired 13 markers for the defending champions, who need to win twice against FEU to enter the finals.

Perpetual Help seeks to keep pace with contenders vs San Beda; Mapua, EAC meet
Perpetual Help tries to reclaim its spot in the top four as it takes on defending champion San Beda in NCAA Season 90 action Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Altas and the Red Lions face off at 2 p.m. live on AksyonTV. Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua also collide at 4 p.m. live on TV5.
Perpetual (8-6) is a half game behind Jose Rizal University and College of Saint Benilde, which both sport 9-5 slates. A victory would help the Altas inch closer to a spot in the final four.
Due to suspensions of scheduled matches due to bad weather, the Altas had a 12-day break since their 91-81 loss to Mapua last September 10.
Top seed San Beda (13-2) is already assured of a final four seat after beating Lyceum, 76-60, last Wednesday.
In the second game, Mapua (4-10) and EAC (3-12) try to improve their place in the standings despite being out of contention already.

Pro-bound Harold Arboleda scored clutch free throws to save the day for Perpetual Help as it survived a furious San Beda comeback for a 76-75 win in NCAA Season 90 action Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Arboleda sank two of three free throws with 0.2 ticks left to save the Altas who lost a 14-point lead entering the final frame.

Arboleda made two of his three free throws as the Altas regained the lead, but the Red Lions still had a chance to steal the win with 0.2 seconds remaining.
The Red Lions drew an alley-oop play for Adeogun, but the play was foiled by the Altas defense.

Endgame melee halts EAC-Mapua match
A fight in the endgame marred the match between Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua in NCAA Season 90 action Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
With the Generals ahead by nine points, 86-77, with just 28.5 seconds left, EAC guard John Tayongtong bumped hardly Mapua guard CJ Isit while dribbling the ball halfcourt.
Mapua’s Leo Gabo then confronted Tayongtong with an elbow shove in defense of his teammate Isit before being prevented by the referees.
But Tayongtong and Isit faced one another again, with the EAC guard punching the Mapua guard twice. A free-for-all brawl then ensued as players from both sides stormed the court exchanging blows to one another.

Bulldogs stay alive, outlast Eagles
September 24, 2014
MANILA, Philippines – National University will live to fight another day after pulling off a dramatic 78-74 victory over top-seeded Ateneo De Manila University in the Final Four phase of the 77th UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs’ steady hands at the free throw line helped stave off a furious rally by the Eagles that saw the former briefly relinquishing a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Staring at a 53-68 deficit, Ateneo unleashed a 19-3 blast capped by Nico Elorde's triple to give the Eagles a 72-71 lead with 1:14 left.
Ateneo's Kiefer Ravena committed two straight fouls on JJ Alejandro and Gelo Alolino, and both drilled two charities each to give the lead back to NU, 75-72, with 31.5 ticks left.
Ravena scored on a quick lay-up but that proved to be the final punch for the Eagles as they failed to score the rest of the way. Alolino then added two more freebies and Henri Betayene split his charities for the final score.
"We just want to give out best in this game. We're not even looking beyond this game. The breaks didn’t go our way and I'm very proud of the boys. The calls weren’t going our way but they kept their composure," said NU head coach Eric Altamirano.
Alejandro topscored for the Bulldogs with 20 points while Alolino, Glenn Khoubuntim and Alfred Aroga chipped in 16, 12, and 11 markers respectively.
"Iniisip ko lang no pressure sa amin, sinabi ni coach gawin lang namin yung best namin para no regrets kami manalo or mataloo makikita naman nila na ginawa naming best effort," said Alejandro.
Altamirano commended their strong start but also saw some things they need to improve on for the crucial do-or-die game next Wednesday, October 1.
"I think that it was very important for us to start strong to give us confidence at the start. Our defense held up but in the second half, medyo nag-relax kami at nagka confidence sila sa transition nila. Those are the things we need to work on," he said.
Ravena led the Eagles with 24 points, but the Ateneo star bled for it as shown by his atrocious 9-of-35 shooting while Chris Newsome and Nico Elorde added 14 and 12 points.
"Kiefer is Kiefer. I don’t think we can really stop him. We tried to stop him, contain him hopefully, but it’s actually a collective effort on our part in trying to defend," shared Altamirano.

Chiefs nip Knights, near NCAA semis
September 24, 2014
MANILA, Philippines – Arellano U outgunned a Kevin Racal-less Letran in the second half as it hammered out a 79-70 victory yesterday to put one foot in the Final Four berth in the 90th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City Wednesday.
John Pinto took charge in the third quarter while Keith Agovida and American Dioncee Holts stepped up in the final period to help seal the Chiefs their 12th victory against four losses and at least a playoff for a Final Four slot.
Pinto, who is expected to get signed up by Global Port after the season, poured in 10 of his 12 in the third canto while Agovida and Holts scattered six apiece in the last canto to finish 19 and 10 points, respectively.
The win also pushed Arellano U, which will take on four-peat champion San Beda on Oct. 4 and Lyceum on Oct. 8, one win away from making its first ever trip to the Final Four since its entry five seasons back.
It was also the Chiefs' first season sweep of the Knights in their six seasons in the league.
"We just came out strong in the second half, that was the biggest difference," said Arellano U coach Jerry Codinera.
The Knights came into the game without their co-captain Kevin Racal, who tore an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in practice the day before.
But Letran appeared unperturbed and even led by double digits in the first half before settling with a 40-33 lead at the break with Mark Cruz, the other team skipper, Reneford Ruaya and Jamil Gabawan stepping up in Racal's absence by scoring seven points apiece.
And then Pinto went on attack mode and willed Arellano U back to knot the count at 58-all at the end of the third period before Agovida and Holts took charge the rest of the way.
The Knights' frustration ended up with Letran mentor Caloy Garcia being ejected with less than a minute left in the game for continuous complaining.
Garcia, who was tossed out the second time this season, said they're just not getting the breaks from the officials.
"I don't know why, it's really beyond me we're not getting the calls," said an exasperated Garcia.
Letran fell to 6-9 (win-loss) and out of semifinal contention.
The scores:
Arellano U 79 – Agovida 19, Pinto 12, Jalalon 10, Holts 10, Ciriacruz 8, Hernandez 6, Palma 4, Caperal 4, Gumaru 2, Salcedo 2, Bangga 1, Enriquez 1, Nicholls 0, Ortega 0
Letran 70 – Ruaya 20, Cruz 10, Gabawan 9, Quinto 7, Luib 6, Saldua 5, Calvo 3, Tambeling 3, Nambatac 3, Castro 2, Publico 2, Apreku 0, Singontiko 0
Quarterscores: 11-23, 33-40, 58-58, 79-70

For coaches Eric Altamirano and Bo Perasol, the week-long break in between the knockout game of their teams National University and Ateneo for a championship berth would work on their favor.
The Bulldogs forced a do-or-die match in their final four series with Ateneo on Wednesday after carving out a 78-74 win. Both teams will face again on October 1, or next Wednesday, to dispute a slot in the finals.
“It’s a good time for us to recuperate, especially our banged-up guys,” Altamirano told InterAksyon.com in an exclusive interview.
According to Altamirano, his players have been playing hurt all season, but they forget all the pain during the games that matter.
“Pagdating kasi sa mga ganitong stage, balewala na yung sakit,” he added.
For Perasol, he also believes it would be a good opportunity for his players to refresh especially his star Kiefer Ravena, who only had five minutes of rest in their loss to NU.
“Katulad niyan, 35 minutes si Kiefer, malaking tulong yun (break) sa amin,” Perasol said.
“Major factor sa amin yan because makakapahinga siya.”

Undermanned EAC, Mapua to forfeit next matches following ugly brawl
Emilio Aguinaldo College and Mapua are forced to forfeit their next scheduled matches after the suspension of their players from ugly brawl during their NCAA Season 90 match.
The Generals could only come up with four players in their match against Perpetual Help on Friday, giving the Altas an automatic win.
The Cardinals, who also have only four players left on their roster, will likewise hand an easy victory to Letran in their supposed match on Monday.
“They are facing possible forfeiture if they cannot come up with five players to start the game,” NCAA Management Committee chairman Paul Supan said in a statement.
A total of 18 players, nine from each team, were slapped with suspensions following the ugly endgame melee that marred the game between EAC and Mapua last Monday.
EAC guard John Tayongtong got the stiffest penalty of a five-game ban after punching Mapua counterpart CJ Isit, while his teammates are slapped with suspensions of one to three matches.
Mapua’s Leo Gabo, who pushed Tayongtong before a free-for-all ensued, is banned for four games as well as his teammates who got bans ranging from one to three matches also.
With the forfeiture of the EAC-Perpetual game, Lyceum (6-9) and San Sebastian (3-11) are the only teams facing off on in a clash of already-eliminated teams on Friday live on TV5 and AksyonTV.

But the Stags made free throws in the end as Lyceum didn’t have enough time to complete the comeback.

(UAAP) Dominant Green Archers force rubber match vs Tamaraws
MANILA, Philippines – The De La Salle Green Archers live to defend their championship another day.
After losing their first three games to the FEU Tamaraws in Season 77 of the UAAP men's basketball tournament, DLSU finally broke through and pulled out a dominant 94-73 win over their rivals on Saturday, September 27, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
As the no. two seed and owners of a twice-to-beat advantage in the UAAP Final Four round, FEU will still have a chance to make the tournament finals, but they'll have to do so by defeating La Salle, the no. three seed, in a do-or-die knockout match on Wednesday, October 1.
It was an all-around performance from the Green Archers, who was spearheaded by 25 points and 7 rebounds from Jeron Teng but also received 18 and 17 markers from Norbert Torres and Almond Vosotros, respectively.
Vosotros also compiled 8 rebounds and 4 assists, while Torres attained 7 boards.
"We were just grateful for the opportunity to play," DLSU head coach Juno Sauler said after the game.
"It takes a team effort," he added later on. "We can't win with just two, three guys."
"We really had to bounce back," added Teng, talking about their prior defeat. "We thought we had to give it for the seniors."
"We want to play more games," he also noted.
The second half opened with DLSU rookie Prince Rivero taking two free throws by virtue of an unsportsmanlike foul called on FEU (hit to the head) before the second quarter finished.
After Rivero made his charities, La Salle went on a roll as they converted on their next three offensive possessions to establish a 43-31 edge. Moments later, Perkins hit a pair of free throws to up the lead to 14.
Just when the Tamaraws started getting stops on defense, a technical foul on head coach Nash Racela halted their momentum. A pair of charities were awarded to Vosotros, who calmly sank both to put La Salle ahead 49-35.
The Green Archers stayed in charge for the rest of the third period, though the quarter didn't come to a close before the game heated up. With a little over a minute to go, Teng's drive saw him attain a basket, but he was also hit in his private area thanks to an elbow by Rob Dennison, which the game's officials deemed an unsportsmanlike foul.
Mac Belo was able to put a couple of points on the scoreboard after, but De La Salle still took a 63-47 edge heading into the final period.
A trio of 3-pointers by Alfrancis Tamsi and Achie Inigo kick-started a mini FEU run in the fourth period, as they cut the lead to 16 after it went up by as much as 21.
However, La Salle didn't permit their rivals from extending their rally as they turned to Teng to re-take the momentum. A few plays later, Jason Perkins's post entry pass reached an open Arnold Van Opstal, whose two-handed slam proved to be the dagger as the archers erected a 20-point lead, 82-62.
Belo had 32 markers to lead FEU, who had no other double-digit scorer with Tolomia coming in second after recording just 7 points.
La Salle shot 42% from the field and 40% from downtown, while out-rebounding their opponents 54-41.
Julian Sargent pitched in 11 points for DLSU, while Perkins finished with 8.
The winner of La Salle and FEU's knockout match on Wednesday will face the winner of Ateneo and NU's do-or-die contest that will take place on the same day.

(NCAA) Five-man EAC gets 34-point drubbing from San Sebastian
San Sebastian steamrolled a severely undermanned Emilio Aguinaldo College, 107-73, in NCAA Season 90 action Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
In the game, the Generals came up with only five eligible players after their lineup was depleted due to suspensions handed following their brawl against Mapua last week.
Nine players from EAC were suspended, while four dodged sanctions as it forfeited its match against Perpetual Help last Friday. Against the Stags, Faustine Pascual came back from his one-game ban to join Jozhua General, Jerald Serrano, Christ Mejos and Ai Indin on the floor for the Generals.
The Stags overwhelmed the Generals from the start, taking a 39-18 lead after the first quarter before grabbing a 44-point cushion, 92-48, entering the final frame.
Jovit Dela Cruz scored 16 points and two assists for San Sebastian, while Serrano led EAC with 20 markers.
The Scores:
San Sebastian 107 – Dela Cruz 16, Camasura 13, Perez 11, Pretta 11, Costelo 9, Balucanag 8, Fabian 8, Santos 7, Calisaan 6, Mercado 6, Guinto 5, Yong 4, Ortuoste 3, Alvarez 0.
EAC 73 – Serrano 20, Indin 17, Mejos 14, General 11, Pascual 11.

(UAAP) NU beats Ateneo for first Finals appearance since 1970
MANILA, Philippines – The Smart Araneta Coliseum rocked and rumbled with the stomps and yells of loud and anxious fans, cheering, even praying, for their respective teams. But one man of all people, coach Eric Altamirano, remained steady, calm and composed despite the amount of pressure threatening to break him.
His team, the National University Bulldogs, were up by a precarious two points with 9.3 seconds left in the game. They have never been in the Finals since 1970.
They are on the brink of redeeming themselves from last year's blunder when, as top seed holding a twice to beat edge, they were toppled by fourth seed UST and fell short of making the Finals yet again. The pressure was on to finally make it.
But despite all of that plus a 20-minute power interruption, the composed Altamirano drew up one last defensive play that fittingly delivered his team through as big man Alfred Aroga swatted away a Kiefer Ravena lay-up attempt to end their 4-decade Finals drought with a 65-63 escape on Wednesday, October 1 in the men's basketball tournament of UAAP Season 77.
"Finally, we were able to break our walls of Jericho," Altamirano said, referring to the Bible story. "It took us 3 times to try to get into the Finals and we're able to make it."
NU became only the second fourth seeded team in the UAAP, next to UST, to overcome a twice to beat disadvantage and make the Finals.
"When you look back 2 or 3 weeks ago this (making the Finals) seemed far-fetched," Altamirano added. "They (team) stayed focus, kept on fighting, they stayed together. I have to give it to the boys."
Once the game resumed when the dimmed arena lights regained full brightness, Ateneo had one 9.3-second final possession to try and force overtime or win the game.
With the defense scrambling, the ball found its way to Ravena's hands, who drove for a lay-up he tried to roll off his fingers. But Aroga, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds to his name, was there to stop this season's MVP's attempt to save the day.
"I think in that last play it (lull) was favorable for us because we were defending," said Altamirano, whose team made it to the Final Four by going through the wringer against an equally tough University of the East.
"We knew where they were going so we were able to stop it."
More than completing the game-sealing defensive stop, Aroga also had a hand at helping guard Gelo Alolino deliver the marginal free throws for the final tally.
With Alolino committing a couple of turnovers and seemingly frustrated, Aroga pulled him aside during a dead ball in the third and gave him a major pep talk.
"He told me, 'You're the best point guard this season. You should know that. You're our leader'," Alolino shared what Aroga told him.
It worked right away as Alolino banked a three-pointer that squashed Ateneo's rally, albeit momentarily. He later dropped 7 of his total 12 points in the final frame, including NU's last 5 points of the contest.
He tied the game for the Bulldogs with 2:01 to go via a gutsy triple, 63-63, before sinking two pressure-packed, game-clinching charities with 9.3 ticks on the clock.
"Before may crucial baskets na hindi ko na-shoot pero ngayon na-deliver ko," Alolino added. (Before I couldn't shoot the crucial baskets but now I was able to deliver.)
Putting up their defensive walls from the very start up until the final second of the game, a superstar-less NU relied heavily on team play and sheer effort on defense to pull through every game this season.
Against an offensive juggernaut in Ateneo, whom NU has swept 4-0 this year after this win, their defense was highlighted even more.
The Eagles figured in a slow start against NU's stingy defense which the Bulldogs exploited to lead by as much as 12, 25-13, midway in the second frame.
However Ateneo, who were 9-0 this season when leading after 3 quarters, per UAAP Chief Statistician Pong Ducanes, came out firing in the third period, outscoring NU by 20-14 as they began hitting their outside shots. They took a slim 47-46 lead over NU entering the fourth. NU was 0-5 this season when trailing after 3 quarters, also per Ducanes.
It was a back and forth affair in the fourth as Ravena made difficult shot after difficult shot, with the help of crucial baskets from his teammates, to steady his team but it wasn't enough for them to return to the Finals after completing the 5-peat in 2012.
Chris Newsome, who kept Ateneo afloat during a cold-shooting first half (15 points on 7-of-9 shooting by halftime), led all Eagles with 22 points and 6 rebounds.
Ravena came out flat with two-of-10 shooting clip for just 5 points at the half but managed to break down NU's focused and intense defensive pressure on him, opting to dish to his teammates first, to end up with 18 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Team captain Glenn Khobuntin added 11 markers and 8 boards for NU who last won a UAAP men's basketball title in 1954.
"I think what happened last year was really to build our character," Altamirano recalled their meltdown against UST in the Final Four last year. "If you come to think of it, what happened made us tougher."
The still calm though visibly relieved coach added his team will continue to play hard defense for the entire Finals series no matter who they face. They intend to complete their romp into history.
"Nandito na kami. Itutuloy tuloy na namin." (We're already here. We'll go all the way.)
The Bulldogs will await the winner between FEU and defending champions La Salle as the best-of-3 Finals is slated to begin on Saturday, October 4.

(UAAP) Belo triple sends FEU to UAAP Finals
MANILA, Philippines - Mac Belo will forever remain a hero in Far Eastern University sports lore.
The FEU star hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer that broke the hearts of the defending champion De La Salle Green Archers and sent the FEU Tamaraws to the finals of the UAAP Season 77 men's basketball tournament, 67-64, on Wednesday evening, October 1.
FEU will face the NU Bulldogs in the finals, which begin on Saturday, October 4, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Belo's finished with 23 points and 8 rebounds, while Tolomia put up 14 markers and 6 dimes. As a team, FEU shot 41% from the field and made 7 3-balls, but none more important than the one Belo hit to end DLSU's title reign at one year.
The now former defending champions were led by Jeron Teng, who scored 13 points and dished 6 assists. Jason Perkins had 12 markers and 12 boards, while Arnold Van Opstal put up 11 points
For a moment, it looked like DLSU would take the upper hand in the final period as Teng went right down to business.
After going scoreless in the second and third quarters, the third-year man scored four of his team's first six points in the period as the Green Archers took a 53-51 lead.
After a layup by Tolomia put FEU back ahead by two, Teng found an open Van Opstal who got the basket and the foul to put DLSU up 56-55 with 5:04 to go. Moments later, Julian Sargent hit his corner 3-ball, extending the lead to four.
However, Belo did not permit his team to go down easily as his midrange jumpers managed to tie the match at 59. After Perkins put his team ahead by two later on with a cut to the rim, Achie Inigo converted a floater that knotted the game at 61.
With 1:05 to go, Belo was found wide open at the top of the key and let it fly. The result was a 64-61 lead for Far Eastern University, which was tied by DLSU thanks to a Perkins free throw and wide open layup by Norbert Torres.
With 24.4 seconds to go, Tolomia was given the responsibility of handling the ball, and he decided to attack to his right. Drawing the defense of Sargent and Perkins, it was Belo who was left wide open in the corner.
Tolomia handed the pass to his teammate who hit the 3-ball just before the buzzer sounded, sending his team to the finals and sending the FEU crowd at the Big Dome into a ruckus.
FEU and NU's finals series will mark the first time since 1993 that the UAAP finals will not include either DLSU or the Ateneo Blue Eagles. NU defeated Ateneo, 65-63, Wednesday afternoon to gain passage to the best-of-three finals.
As a team, DLSU shot 40% from the field and managed to outrebound the shorter Tams only by 2, 44-42. It was the last game for graduating players Almond Vosotros, Yutien Andrada, and Norbert Torres.
The Tamaraws shot only 50% from the free throw line but the Green Archers were much worse, shooting only 39%. FEU also did a better job of distributing the ball, handing out 17 assists to DLSU's 15.
Roger Pogoy had 8 points and Anthony Hargrove had 6, respectively, for FEU, which beat DLSU four out of the five times the two squads faced each other in Season 77.
It was an exchange of baskets in the first period as both clubs opened the game on fire. But towards the end of the first quarter, the Tamaraws managed to get some defensive stops and took advantage on the other side of the floor, taking a 7-point lead to the second period.
Down 26-19, the Green Archers went on an 11-0 run thanks in large part to Teng, who made an exerted effort to find open teammates. The DLSU star's passing found open shots for the likes of rookies Prince Rivero and Sargent, who put La Salle ahead 30-26 after making a right-corner 3-ball.
Midway through the second quarter, 7 straight points by Tolomia helped his team regain momentum and take a four-point lead, 36-32. The Tamaraws were quicker to loose balls and did a better job of winning the 50-50 possessions, which in turn led them to have a 42-37 lead at the half.

(UAAP) No Ateneo, no La Salle in final ‘the best thing to ever happen to the UAAP’, says FEU coach Nash Racela
For two whole decades, UAAP rivals De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila have had their fair share of the limelight.
In every single year since 1994, at least one of the two teams was able to make it into the title series with the two squads even going head-to-head on three separate occasions.
That streak was broken this season, with the FEU Tamaraws and the NU Bulldogs set to clash for the title, and FEU coach Nash Racela believes that having the attention placed on the other UAAP teams will be a boon for the league.
“I’ll be vocal about it. Kasi I realized last year lang, Ateneo and La Salle always in the finals since 1994. It’s the best thing to ever happen to the UAAP having FEU and NU in the finals,” Racela said in an interview after the game.
The Tamaraws’ mentor pointed to the quality of the games that the two finalists have displayed this season as well as the capability of the schools to pack the arena with supporters as good signs heading into the final.
“Just like how we witnessed it today. NU could bring the crowd. FEU could bring the crowd. Hindi lang naman Ateneo and La Salle makakapagdala niyan,” he said.
“I think it’s the best thing to ever happen in the UAAP.”
It will be the first finals series since 1992 where neither side of the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry will make an appearance. The last time that happened, Johnny Abarrientos was still the star of the collegiate ranks and led his FEU team to a championship over their much taller counterparts from Adamson, bannered by the Falcons current coaches Kenneth Duremdes and Marlou Aquino as well as fellow former pro EJ Feihl.
In 1993, UST swept the elimination round to win the title outright.
But while several other teams were able to win the UAAP championship since that time, most notably the UST dynasty in the mid 90s, one of Ateneo and La Salle has always been in the title picture, with the two squads winning six championships apiece in that span.
La Salle won four consecutive titles from 1997 to 2001 and again in 2007 and most recently, last season. Ateneo, meanwhile, ended La Salle’s streak in 2002 and built their own dynasty a few years later, winning five championships in a row from 2008 to 2012.
NU was the first team to reach the championship round after outlasting Ateneo, 65-63, in the first game on Wednesday while FEU dethroned the reigning champion La Salle courtesy of a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Tamaraws star Mac Belo.

(UAAP) FEU holds off NU in Game 1 to move one win away from UAAP title
MANILA, Philippines – 2005. That was the last time the FEU Tamaraws won a UAAP men's basketball championship.
Nine years later, FEU inches closer to breaking that spell, as they are now one win away from winning their 20th title in the UAAP's 77-year history.
That became the case after the Tamaraws, three days fresh off an unforgettable win against defending champion De La Salle Green Archers at the buzzer, held on late in the fourth quarter to get past the pesky NU Bulldogs, 75-70, in game one of their best-of-three finals on Saturday afternoon, October 4, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Mac Belo struggled from the field as he made only 3 of his 13 attempts from the field, but converted the most important shot of the game for FEU, which also got 15 and 14 points from Mike Tolomia and RR Pogoy, respectively.
Game two is on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, where the Tamaraws could put their nine-year title drought behind them along with the disappointing eliminations they've suffered over the past few seasons.
"The most important game is the first game," said FEU head coach Nash Racela after the game. "We'll treat the next game as a do or die game."
The Pogoy show
The second half quickly turned into the RR Pogoy show, as the veteran scorer racked up 7 quick points to turn momentum to the Tamaraws' side in the opening minutes of the third quarter.
NU struggled on offense all throughout the third and was unable to take advantage of their biggest strength - their defense - as Far Eastern University scored 25 total points in the period.
"We just reminded them to do the right things," Racela talked about his halftime adjustments with his club, who was on the losing side of the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play.
"We were giving them (NU) breakdowns. I think we just reminded them to be disciplined and tamang depensa (play correct defense.)"
Entering the fourth quarter, the Tamaraws were ahead by 10, 60-50.
The Bulldogs didn't go away easily as they went on a 9-4 run to start the final quarter, capped off by a lefty layup by Gelo Alolino, to cut FEU's lead to 5, 64-59, with about five minutes to go in the contest.
A couple of jumpers by FEU extended the lead back up to 9, but the Bulldogs kept it close thanks to a combined 5 points from Alfred Aroga and Alolino.
Not long after, a clutch 3-ball by the erstwhile struggling JJ Alejandro proved huge, as it cut the Tams' lead to 3, 71-68, with 1:01 to go in game one.
Off the time-out Racela designed a play for Belo, who after a few screens caught a slower Aroga on him. Thanks to his foot speed, Belo managed to leave the Bulldogs' best defensive player biting his dust and converted a left-handed layup that put FEU up by 5, 73-68.
"Perfect place, perfect timing. Again... Mac is not afraid to take the big shots," Racela complimented his star player.
"I think NU made good adjustments... so we had to look for another guy. We were blessed na si Mac delivered."
In the following possessions, NU managed to convert a pair of free throws and get a defensive stop to have one last crack at a 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.
However, Glenn Khobuntin missed on his three-point attempt, which was followed by game-sealing free throws courtesy of Achie Inigo.
"We'll review. For sure, Coach Eric will have a lot of adjustments," Racela mentioned in Filipino. "We'll anticipate that."
Aroga led the Bulldogs with 17 points and 8 rebounds, while Alolino wasn't far behind with 14 and 7.
Troy Rosario, who left the game in the fourth period due to cramps, had 12 points and 8 boards.
NU had 31 attempts from the free throw line, but only made 15.
"I think it's a blessing they had 31 free throws," Racela said during the post-game media session. FEU had only 13 attempts from the foul line, but converted 11 and shot a respectable 41% from the field.
NU was the first team to make a significant run as they amped up the pressure on the defensive end in the second quarter.
Thanks to the Bulldogs' scrappy defense, the Tamaraws began turning the ball over on consecutive possessions which helped NU get their lead up to six.
Not long after, Rosario hit a step-back jumper to up his scoring output to eight and make the count 28-18, the first time a team had a double-digit lead in the ballgame.
A layup by Reden Celda put the Bulldogs up by 12, but FEU didn't allow the deficit to grow any larger. Thanks to a quick scoring outburst from Tolomia and Raymar Jose, the Tams managed to slice the deficit to one.
Towards the end of the first half, the pesky antics of FEU guard Ron Dennison started to disrupt the flow of Alolino, as the two exchanged some words and a staredown late in the second quarter.

(NCAA) Benilde thumps Mapua to boost final four chances
College of Saint Benilde moved closer to a final four berth after an 87-76 win over a depleted Mapua in NCAA Season 90 action Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Jonathan Grey grabbed 19 points, six rebounds and four assists to lead the Blazers (11-6) who tied Jose Rizal University (11-6) for the fourth and final playoff spot.
JRU is battling San Sebastian as of posting time, and a Heavy Bombers loss would mean that the Blazers are just a win away from officially locking in a ticket to the final four.
Benilde got off to a 7-0 start, but the Cardinals, who were playing with just seven players following suspensions they got from a bench-clearing brawl, kept the game close all throughout as Exeqiel Biteng kept Mapua afloat.
Benilde just led by four points, 37-33, after two quarters.
But the Blazers woke up in the third period, with Grey, Paolo Taha and Fons Saavedra hitting baskets as they built a 66-52 cushion entering the final frame that kept Mapua at bay.
Taha added 18 points, while Saavedra chipped in 13 markers for Benilde.
Biteng led all scorers with 23 points in Mapua’s losing effort.
The scores:
CSB (87) — Grey 19, Taha 18, Saavedra 13, Sinco 11, Romero 6, Bartolo 6, Ongteco 4, Jonson 2, Nayve 2, Argamino 2, Flores 2, Altamirano 2, Pajarillaga 0, Mercado 0, Deles 0.

(NCAA) JRU turns back San Sebastian, books final four return
Jose Rizal University punched a ticket to the final four after surviving a late scare from San Sebastian, 82-77, in NCAA Season 90 action Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Philip Paniamogan scored 24 points and made six steals, as well as shot 10 of 12 from the charity stripe to propel the Heavy Bombers to their first semifinal appearance since 2011.
JRU led by as much as 25 points, 62-37, in the third quarter before San Sebastian ended the period with a 18-7 run to trim its deficit, 69-55.
The Stags further inched closer, with CJ Perez giving headaches to the JRU defense with his drives to the basket.
A triple by Ivan Camasura and a split from Bobby Balucanag eventually kept the Stags within three, 79-76, with 42.1 seconds left.
Paniamogan then got called for a shot clock violation, opening the door once more for the Stags. But Camasura was blocked by Abdulrazak Abdulwahab, followed by Paniamogan’s free throws with 27.6 ticks left to seal the final four berth for JRU.
The victory assured JRU (12-6) of a spot in the final four, but the Heavy Bombers’ placing in the playoffs is not yet determined as College of Saint Benilde (11-6) remains still in the hunt for a spot.
A victory by the Blazers over Letran on Wednesday would force a triple tie at 12-6 with JRU and Perpetual Help. In that scenario, the Heavy Bombers would clinch the third seed due to superior quotient, with Benilde and Perpetual contesting the last final four spot.
Should Benilde lose to the Knights, the Blazers will be eliminated, leaving JRU and Perpetual disputing for the third seed in a playoff.
The Scores:
JRU (82) — Paniamogan 24, Benavides 13, Mabulac 13, Teodoro 10, Asuncion 10, Abdulwahab 6, Sanchez 3, Grospe 3, Astilla 0, Lasquety 0, Balagtas 0.

(UAAP) NU outlasts FEU to force rubber match for UAAP title
MANILA, Philippines – The National University Bulldogs are at it again, proving their bite is much fiercer when their backs are against the wall.
The Bulldogs shrugged off the jitters from Game 1 and employed airtight defense to shut down the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 62-47, on Wednesday, October 8 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to even the best-of-3 series at 1-1 and force a winner-take-all Game 3 for the UAAP Season 77 men's basketball title.
Gelo Alolino hit back-to-back dagger three-pointers with just over a minute left in the contest to suck the air out of the rallying Tamaraws, 56-44. And even as Mike Tolomia answered with his own shot from beyond the arc that made it 56-47, the damage had already been done, and NU's bid for their first title since 1954 is alive once more after losing Game 1 of the series.
Alolino wound up with 12 points, 7 rebounds and two assists.
Troy Rosario led NU's cause with 19 points and 14 rebounds. While Glenn Khobuntin added 17 markers.
Alfred Aroga asserted his presence underneath defensively and finished with 7 points and 13 boards.
"We really focused on getting back to our roots and our defense," head coach Eric Altamirano said.
NU, which even suspended its classes from 12 noon onwards to allow its students to watch the all-important game, did not disappoint the throng of supporters that trooped to the Big Dome as they returned to the basics and put on a defensive clinic to force FEU to a season-low output of 47 points.
It looked like a slow start for FEU as the Bulldogs pounced and raced to a 22-6 advantage early in the second quarter.
But as the game wore on, and even when the Tamaraws managed to chop the lead down to 26-18 by halftime, it became clear NU had simply locked down FEU's guns.
NU held FEU to a paltry 23% shooting after the first two quarters, all while getting the most of their 16 second-chance opportunities and getting 10 points from it.
The Tamaraws, struggling to get their offense going and flip the pace to their favor, managed to cut the lead to just 6 in the third quarter before NU strung together some points for a 43-30 entering the fourth.
That lead later rose to 15, 45-30, after a Rosario basket.
FEU still fought against NU's defensive walls and came to within 50-44 courtesy of a Tolomia jumper with 2:45 to play.
But that's when Alolino struck with his dagger triple and finished the job for NU.
Mythical 5 member Mac Belo led all Tamaraws with 17 points and 6 rebounds while Tolomia added 15 markers and 5 rebounds.
Game 3 will be played on Wednesday, October 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena at 3:30 PM.
The scores:
NU (62): Rosario 19, Khobuntin 17, Alolino 12, Aroga 7, Alejandro 2, Diputado 2, Neypes 2, Javelona 1, Betayene 0, Perez 0.
FEU (47): Belo 17, Tolomia 15, Iñigo 7, Pogoy 4, Cruz 2, Jose 2, Tamsi 0, Dennison 0, Escoto 0, Hargrove 0, Denila 0, Yu 0, Ugsang 0, Escoto 0, David 0.
Quarter scores: 18-6, 26-18, 43-30, 62-47.

(UAAP) Kiefer Ravena trains with Talk 'N Text, open to playing for Gilas
MANILA, Philippines - UAAP Season 77 is not over yet but Ateneo Blue Eagles star Kiefer Ravena is back on the grind already.
The newly minted Most Valuable Player said he is working on improving himself by joining the training of PBA team Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters.
"I just practiced with TNT but it's just to improve myself because we have the Unigames. Yun na pinaghahandaan namin," Ravena, 20, said after he received his trophy and raked in plenty more special awards. (That's what we're preparing for now.)
Ravena says he asked his father Bong Ravena, who is part of the Texters' coaching staff, if he could join the team's training as it prepares for the upcoming Philippine Cup to open the PBA's 40th season.
"Since wala pa kami practice I asked my dad if I could join their practice first. I was able to join their conditioning and workout," he shared.
Despite training with a pro team, Ravena assured he will be standing by his word of playing out his final year with Ateneo next year.
"I'll still take my talents to Katipunan," he said in jest.
Ravena admitted the loss to National University in the Final Four despite Ateneo holding the top seed and the twice-to-beat still hurts.
But he is looking forward to the time off to recuperate and find out how to make the team better. He is also confident the Blue Eagles will bounce back next season.
"It's gonna be a stronger team definitely next season. But now we have time to think about how to improve and we have time to give the rookies more exposure. We also have time to watch the game even when it hurts."
Open to Gilas
Still a Gilas cadet, Ravena also declared he is open to suiting up for the national team once again if he should be called upon to do so.
"Pag kinuha nila ako I'll be open to it," he said. "I would be open most definitely. I won't think twice of joining the Gilas team." (If they get me I'll be open to it.)
Ravena last wore the national jersey during the Southeast Asian Games in 2013 for Sinag Pilipinas together with fellow college standouts Ray Parks and Kevin Ferrer as they brought home the gold medal.

(NCAA) San Beda retains No.1 spot with 28-point rout of Arellano
Defending champion San Beda didn’t let the No.1 spot slip away from its hands after clobbering Arellano, 97-69, in NCAA Season 90 action Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
The victory continued the Red Lions’ dominance on top of the team standings and earned them a twice-to-beat advantage over No.4 Perpetual Help in the final four.
Despite the loss, No.2 Arellano still has a twice-to-beat edge against No.3 Jose Rizal University as the Chiefs make their semifinals debut.
Baser Amer finished with 19 points, three rebounds and five assists to lead San Beda.
San Beda used a blistering 15-0 attack led by Amer to end the second period and grab a 43-32 halftime lead as Arellano lost composure after getting called with two unsportsmanlike fouls during that stretch.
John Pinto sank a stepback jumper, while Keith Agovida slammed on a breakaway as Arellano came within eight points early, 51-43, early in the third period.
But Dan Sara fired back-to-back triples to ignite a 12-4 run that gave San Beda a commanding 63-47 lead which the Red Lions extended to as much as 32 points in the fourth quarter.

(NCAA) JRU outlasts Perpetual Help in OT to grab third spot
Jose Rizal University escaped Perpetual Help, 82-79, in overtime to clinch the No.3 seed in NCAA Season 90 Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
With the win, the Heavy Bombers will face the losing team in the tiff between San Beda and Arellano which are battling for the top spot as of posting time.
Bern Teodoro scored 16 points, three rebounds and two steals to lead JRU which engaged in a tight battle against Perpetual all game long.
The Altas looked to grab the win in regulation after Juneric Baloria scored five straight points to give them a 73-71 lead with under a minute remaining in the fourth frame.
But Teodoro attacked to the basket and converted a nifty layup on the other end to tie the game at 73-all with 21.7 seconds left.
Scottie Thompson tried to score the game-winner, but he failed to make a shot as buzzer sounded. Referees blew a whistle during a loose ball play in the dying seconds, but after a review, they decided to just send the game to extra time.
With the game tied at 75-all, Teodoro fired a triple from way beyond the arc for a 78-75 JRU lead with 2:45 remaining.
Gab Dagangon kept the Altas afloat, making four straight points to keep them within one, 80-79. Harold Arboleda then got a steal, leading to a fastbreak anchored by Dagangon who unfortunately missed a tough reverse.
Philip Paniamogan sank two free throws for an 82-79 JRU lead with 11 ticks left, still enough for Perpetual to tie the game with a three-pointer.
However, Baloria’s go-ahead trey was short as the Heavy Bombers came away with the victory.
Paniamogan added 15 markers for JRU, while Justin Alano led Perpetual with 19 points.
The Scores:
JRU (82) — Teodoro 16, Paniamogan 15, Abdulwahab 11, Benavides 9, Balagtas 8, Mabulac 8, Sanchez 4, Asuncion 4, Astilla 2, Grospe 2, Manuel 2, Lasquety 1.

(NCAA) NCAA final four wars begin with San Beda battling Perpetual, Arellano taking on JRU
Defending champion San Beda looks to move closer to its fifth straight crown while Arellano tries to make a splash in its playoffs debut as they take on a dangerous Perpetual Help and a gritty Jose Rizal University squad in the NCAA final four wars which begin on Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
The Red Lions, once again the best team after the elimination round, hold a twice-to-beat advantage against the Altas at 2 p.m. live on AksyonTV.
The Chiefs, who are also enjoying a twice-to-beat edge in their final four debut, take on the Heavy Bombers at 4 p.m. live on TV5.
San Beda is looking to continue its playoff dominance against Perpetual, which the reigning titlists also beat last year in the final four.
This year, the Altas are trying to spoil the party for the Red Lions, who fell to them once in during the eliminations, 76-75, last September 22. San Beda pulled off a 77-75 win in their first matchup last August 6.
The trio of Baser Amer, Ola Adeogun and Art Dela Cruz are seeking to lift the Red Lions once again to the title game, but they have to withstand first an expected tough challenge from the Altas’ formidable four composed of Juneric Baloria, Harold Arboleda, Justin Alano and Most Valuable Player frontrunner Scottie Thompson.
After surprising opponents with a second-place finish in the team standings, Arellano is aiming to impress in its playoff debut. The Chiefs are in a good position to enter its first finals, only needing one win over JRU to advance.
The Chiefs and the Heavy Bombers split their season series, with JRU escaping with a 99-98 triple overtime win last August and Arellano getting back with a 75-69 victory last September 12.
Arellano is leaning once again on John Pinto, Jiovani Jalalon and Prince Caperal, while JRU is relying on the production of Philip Paniamogan, Michael Mabulac and Tey Teodoro.

(UAAP) NU Bulldogs win first UAAP championship in 60 years
The National University Bulldogs won its first UAAP men’s basketball title since 1954 after outlasting the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 75-59, in the no-tomorrow Game Three of Season 77 finals on Wednesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
NU, which dropped Game One of the title series with FEU, 75-70, swept the last two games to also become the first fourth seed to win the championship in the UAAP’s final four era.
The Bulldogs dominated the second half, outscoring the Tamaraws, 25-18, in the third and 20-14 in the fourth to finish the game strong and clinch the title in front of a record crowd of 25, 138.
NU’s Cameroonian center Alfred Aroga led the way with 24 points while Gelo Alolino had 12 and J-jay Alejandro and Glenn Khobuntin added 10 apiece.
Aroga was named Finals MVP after averaging 16 points and 13 rebounds in the finals and he was mobbed by his teammates after receiving the award.
FEU enjoyed a strong start behind some early heroics from an on-point Mike Tolomia.
The Tamaraws’ star guard banked home a runner after an excellent sidestep to open scoring before following it up by sinking a midrange jumper. He’d later add a three-pointer to cap an 11-5 run for FEU to start the game.
It would not last, though, as Aroga made sure his presence was felt after coming off the bench in this game.
The Cameroonian center twice completed three-point plays – one coming after the 6-foot-7 big man dribbled the full length of the court like a guard.
With Khobuntin, Kyle Neypes and Troy Rosario all sharing the load, the Bulldogs went on a 15-5 rally that swung the game in their favor, 20-16, before Tolomia snuck inside and barely beat the quarter buzzer with a second chance layup for FEU.
Tolomia scored 11 of the Tamaraws’ 18 first quarter points.
Alejandro had some big contributions for the Bulldogs early in the second period. He knocked down a jumper from the left wing for his first two points before making a highlight reel defensive play, swatting FEU point guard Achie Inigo’s layup attempt in transition.
After Aroga provided some more top-level defense in the paint, blocking two separate shots in the paint, Alejandro broke away for an easy, wide-open layup.
A pair of free throws from Aroga gave NU its highest lead at that point of the game at eight points, 26-18.
The teams turned up the defense in the second, with the Bulldogs allowing only eight FEU points all quarter long while the Tamaraws held NU to just two points in a stretch of nearly seven minutes to come to within four, 30-26, at the half.
Tolomia had 13 points to lead FEU at the break while Aroga dominated on both ends of the floor with 12 points and three blocks. No other player from either side scored more than four points.
FEU’s MVP candidate Mac Belo, who has had to bleed for his points in this UAAP Finals series, tried to bring his team back in the third, scoring the first six FEU points of the quarter on a tip-in, a pair of free throws and strong post-up move on his primary defender, Khobuntin.
But Aroga continued to do his damage, extending out and knocking down a jumper from the baseline and muscling his way back down in the paint as NU pushed the lead back up to seven, 39-32.
Tolomia hit a three to bring FEU closer before NU unleashed a big run that changed the complexion of the game.
Alolino responded to Tolomia’s shot with a three-pointer on the other end before Rev Diputado made a big defensive play, getting a steal and starting a fastbreak that ended up with an unsportsmanlike foul on FEU’s Reymar Jose. Though Aroga missed his two free throws, Alolino scored on a floater on the ensuing possession.
Diputado then joined in on the scoring end, knocking down a trey of his own and adding two more points on a drive to cap a 10-0 run for the Bulldogs that made it a 14-point game, 49-35, with 2:53 remaining in the third.
FEU made a strong stand to close the quarter but big shots from Alejandro – a three-pointer and a three-point play – were enough for NU to carry a 55-44 lead into the final canto.
Belo tried to nudge FEU with some early baskets but NU had an answer to everything the Tamaraws could throw at them.
Khobuntin, whose parents were in attendance to watch him play in the UAAP for the very first time, helped put the game away, scoring six straight points in a 10-4 NU run that gave them a 16-point lead with a minute remaining.
Tolomia finished with 23 points while Belo had 17 for the runner-up Tamaraws.
The scores:
NU (75) – Aroga 24, Alolino 12, Alejandro 10, Khobuntin 10, Neypes 8, Rosario 6, Diputado 5, Betayene 0, Javelona 0, Perez 0, Salim 0.
FEU (58) – Tolomia 23, Belo 17, Dennison 6, Jose 4, Cruz 3, Inigo 3, Hargrove 2, Pogoy 0, Ru. Escoto 0, Ri. Escoto 0, Tamsi 0, Ugsang 0.

(NCAA) San Beda gores Perpetual Help, books finals return to near fifth straight title
Defending champion San Beda clobbered a hard-fighting Perpetual Help squad, 81-75, to punch a ticket again to the NCAA Season 90 finals Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
It will be the ninth straight finals appearance for the Red Lions, who continued their mastery of the Altas after beating them for the third straight time in the final four.
Anthony Semerad led San Beda scorers with 18 points, while Baser Amer added 17 points. Ola Adeogun also chipped in 13 markers, while Art Dela Cruz scored 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead San Beda, which is seeking a five-peat for the title this season.
San Beda led by as much as 26 points, but Perpetual just kept on fighting until the end but eventually fell short against the reigning titlists.
San Beda had its guns ablaze right at the opening tip, with Amer, Dela Cruz and Adeogun teaming up on offense while stifling the Perpetual offense to fuel a 16-1 start.
The Red Lions continued their onslaught in the second period, extending their lead to as much as 26 points, 44-18, at the half.
The Altas woke up in the third quarter, with Scottie Thompson intercepting San Beda’s plays to lead a Perpetual attack. Undersized big man Justin Alano also pounded himself inside the taller San Beda frontline for an 11-0 run that put them within 15, 44-29.
Perpetual continued to cut San Beda’s lead, with Juneric Baloria scoring a buzzer-beating layup to help the Altas close within 11, 55-44, entering the final frame.
The Altas were able to come within eight points, 55-47, early in the fourth quarter, but Adeogun and JP Mendoza had answers to keep Perpetual at bay.
Gab Dagangon scored a layup with 1:18 left to keep Perpetual afloat, 74-65, with 1:18 left. Arboleda sank a triple as the Altas remained alive and kicking with just an eight-point deficit, 78-70, with 52.7 ticks remaining.
Perpetual was able to come as close to five, 80-75, with 19.4 ticks left. But an Amer split from the line followed by an Altas miss on the other end sealed the win for San Beda.
San Beda will face the winner of the Arellano-Jose Rizal University final four clash also slated on Wednesday.
The scores:
San Beda (81) — A. Semerad 18, Amer 17, Adeogun 13, Mendoza 12, Dela Cruz 11, Pascual 6, Koga 2, Tonco 2, Sara 0, Abude 0, D. Semerad 0.

(NCAA) Arellano knocks out JRU to punch historic finals ticket
Arellano dispatched Jose Rizal University, 72-65, to march to its first-ever finals appearance in NCAA Season 90 Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
After making its final four debut this season, Arellano is also appearing in its first title match since joining the league in 2009.
Arellano will try to stop the dominance of four-time champion San Beda in the NCAA finals beginning on Monday.
Dioncee Holts scored 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Chiefs.
Arellano led by as much as 12 points, 44-32, in the third quarter but JRU was able to tie the game at 61-all in the fourth quarter after Jaycee Asuncion and Tey Teodoro caught fire from the field.
Asuncion drained another jumper to give JRU a 63-62 lead. However, Arellano scored seven straight points capped by a Keith Agovida slam and a Jiovani Jalalon double-pumped layup for a 69-63 Chiefs lead with over a minute left which was too much to overcome for the Heavy Bombers.

(UAAP) NU's Khobuntin relishes UAAP title 'no one expected us to win'
Like fellow graduating forward Troy Rosario, skipper Glenn Khobuntin gave National University something that former team stars Ray Parks and Danny Ildefonso failed to do: A UAAP men’s cage championship.
The 6-foot-4 Khobuntin made sure he would leave an indelible mark when he played an instrumental role in NU’s epic romp back to the top of the UAAP men’s basketball tournament that ended the Bulldogs’ 60-year long title drought and brought back the “surreal feeling” of being champions again.
“Sobrang special ng taong ito para sa akin,” he said during the team’s victory dinner on Wednesday at a restaurant inside the SM Megamall in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City following their 75-59 victory over Far Eastern U in their winner-take-all match for the Season 77 crown at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Sobrang importante kasi hindi namin in-expect na mapupunta kami sa sitwasyon ito. Tapos nangyari pa sa last year ko. Nakuha namin ‘yung gusto naming ibigay sa school,” added Khobuntin, who collected six of his 10 points in the payoff period during their historic triumph witnessed by more than 25,000 fans inside the Big Dome.
“Sobrang kumpleto na talaga dahil andito rin ang pamilya ko. Nagpunta lang talaga sila dito sa Manila sa Game 3,” added the Cagayan de Oro native.
Khobuntin also could not help but relish the way they virtually started from scratch following the exodus of vital cogs, including former two-time league MVP Ray Parks, and completed one of the unlikeliest championship runs in league history when they became the first No. 4 squad to go all the way since the Final Four format was implemented in 1994.
“Malaking challenge sa team, lalong lalo na sa akin nu’ng umalis si Ray. Ang dami kong naririnig sa ibang tao na ‘Paano na ang NU? Paano na ang school namin dahil wala ng Parks?’ Kaya ginawa ko ‘yung personal motivation at challenge para magawa ko ‘yung dapat kong gawin.
“Ginawa ko ‘yung role na sinabi sa akin ni Coach (Eric Altamirano) at nagsilbi akong isa sa mga leaders ng team,” he added.
Although he admitted it’s still a big plus when you have a 6-foot-4 Parks in the fold, Khobuntin added they tried to find ways to fill that big void by playing unselfish offensively and unforgiving defensively.
“Nu’ng umalis siya (Parks), nag-usap-usap kami sa team. Wala na sa amin na star player so we need to work together. Doon nag-bloom lahat,” he stressed.
“Tsaka naging matured kami sa hirap ng dinaanan namin,” added Khobuntin, referring to their arduous climb to the finals by initially surviving University of the East for the last semis spot and overcoming a twice-to-win disadvantage against top seed Ateneo in the Final Four.
“Naging willing rin kami na ipasa ang bola kung sino ang mas open. Naging team player talaga lahat. Minsann may naghahanap ng score pero pinapaalala namin na dumepensa muna,” said the graduating Commerce student.

(NCAA) Perpetual Help’s Scottie Thompson named MVP of NCAA Season 90

San Beda moved just a win away from a fifth straight title after pummeling Arellano, 74-66, in Game One of the best-of-three NCAA Season 90 finals on Monday at Mall of Asia Arena.
The victory means that San Beda would just need one more victory to clinch its 19th basketball title and a rare five-peat.
Ola Adeogun posted 14 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Red Lions.
The Red Lions went off to a roaring start with a blistering 11-0 run thanks to a starting lineup composed of four big men in Adeogun, Kyle Pascual, Anthony Semerad, Art Dela Cruz and a guard in Baser Amer.
San Beda went on to lead by as much as 15 points before Arellano came back. Nico Bangga provided quality minutes off the bench as the Chiefs were able to play their trademark run-and-gun game to tie the game at 31-all in the second quarter.
However, the Red Lions closed the quarter with a 9-0 run to grab a 40-31 halftime lead.
San Beda remained in control in the second half, and looked on its way to a victory after a 59-48 lead entering the final frame.
But Arellano didn’t give up right away, John Pinto and Jiovani Jalalon leading the Chiefs in fastbreak plays which trimmed their deficit to just five, 61-56, with 6:07 left in the game.
The Red Lions easily doused the Chiefs’ uprising, as Dela Cruz scored a jumper and a layup in succession to lift San Beda to a 67-57 advantage which was enough to ward off Arellano.
Amer led San Beda with 17 points, while Semerad added 14 markers. Dela Cruz also chipped in 13 points.
Keith Agovida paced Arellano with 14 points.

(NCAA) Complete dominance: San Beda sweeps Arellano to win fifth straight NCAA crown
The San Beda Red Lions stamped their dominance anew, trouncing the gallant Arellano Chiefs to come away with an 89-70 victory in Game Two for their fifth straight title in NCAA Season 90 Wednesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
It is the 19th basketball championship and eighth in the last nine years for San Beda, which has dominated the past decade of the country’s oldest collegiate league.
The Red Lions also spoiled a courageous effort from finals newcomer Arellano, which was hoping to topple San Beda and pull off a surprise run to the title in the Chiefs’ first appearance in the title match.
Anthony Semerad exploded for 30 points to spearhead the Red Lions.
Unlike in Game One, the Chiefs held their ground against the Red Lions in the first quarter and did not allow any scoring barrage from San Beda, which led 22-14 after the period.
But San Beda broke the game wide open at the start of the second period, with Dan Sara drilling two straight triples and Semerad also nailing one to push the Red Lions’ lead to 15, 31-16.
Arellano couldn’t make its baskets during that juncture, only coming up with nine points compared to San Beda’s 17 as the Red Lions threatened to pull away.
However, the Chiefs woke up in the third period, applying pressure defense which gave headaches to San Beda’s big lineup. Arellano was able to get steals and force turnovers, allowing the Chiefs to come as close to seven points for many times during hte quarter.
San Beda showed its championship poise, making bailout shots enough to keep the Chiefs at bay as the Red Lions took a 63-52 edge entering the final frame.
Keith Agovida tried to carry the Chiefs in the fourth period, scoring four straight points to keep Arellano within nine, 65-56.
But Kyle Pascual countered with six consecutive points as San Beda held a commanding 74-59 lead with over six minutes remaining which was too much to overcome for Arellano.
Arellano suffered some scary moments, as John Pinto went down after a jumper attempt at the 6:12 mark of the fourth period. Agovida and Ice Ciriacruz also fouled out shortly after as the Red Lions got away with the win.
