MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines ranked at 37th place in military strength among 106 nations in the world in the 2014 Global Firepower (GFP) report based on ‘each nation’s potential conventional war-making capabilities’ across land, sea and air.
According to the GFP website, the ranking is based on a formula employing more than fifty factors it compiled and measured against each nation or the Power Index.
A Power Index of 0.0000 would have been considered a perfect score, and consequently, the mightiest nation on the planet in terms of military power.
However, there are a number of elements considered or left out, bonuses and penalties which affect the ranking; the most notable of which is that nuclear capabilities are not taken into account as it is not considered a ‘conventional’ armament.
The Philippines with a score of 1.3042 is at 37th place, while its adversary in the West Philippine Sea territorial conflict, China, is way above at 3rd place with 0.2594 score, just below United States and Russia.
The US was on top with a Power Index of 0.2208 followed by Russia with a 0.2355 score.
The Philippines’ enhancement of military capability has been stagnant for decades until the present Aquino administration initiated a P75-billion program that aimed at upgrading the nation’s arsenal with modern aircrafts and naval vessels amid the growing tension over maritime dispute with China.
Recently, it has finalized a couple of deals worth $527-million to purchase 12 FA-50 fighter jets and four Bell 412 military helicopters.
Based on the GFP report, the Philippines ranked 4th among its neighbors in the Southeast Asia behind Indonesia (19th – 0.8008), Vietnam (23rd – 0.8962) and Thailand (24th – 0.9287).
However, it is slightly higher than Malaysia (38th – 1.3143), Singapore (44th – 1.4699) and Cambodia (84th – 2. 5798).
Japan, a former military empire and another country embroiled in a separate territorial dispute with China was ranked at 10th place with a Power Index of 0.5581.
The top 10 includes: (1) United States; (2) Russia; (3) China; (4) India; (5) United Kingdom (6) France; (7 ) Germany; (8 ) Turkey; (9) South Korea; and (10) Japan.
The bottom 5, meanwhile, are the following: (106) Tanzania; (105) Madagascar; (104) Mozambique; (103) Lithuania; and (102) Laos.

how about north korea and taiwan (chinese-taipei)?
-
may mga bansa na walang armed forces dahil hindi nila kailangan. Being #37 does not mean na angat tayo.

OT:
Russia has a lot of standby army, so does China, pero I know the US though lumbering and sputtering as they may seem lately has tricks up its sleeve.
If you are the top dog for so many years, it makes sense for you to take steps to keep it that way. They say the US military technology is at least 10 years ahead of what they show the public. That might be true, they are ultra secretive after all, not to mention their various agencies also with extreme penchant for clandestine activities.
If there was a brawl between the the Eagle, The Bear and The Dragon I think the Eagle can still take them on. Russia and China may be strong, but I fail to see their alliances being as formidable as the one the US have so dun palang. Hmm. China isn't making a lot of friends lately in the neighborhood too so there's also that.
The US always had a bogeyman, the Germans in WW2, then the Russians with the cold war, then the Japanese in the 70's and 80's with their economic boom, then the Chinese in the mid 90's-2000's with their own economic boom. I'm actually curious to see whose next.
Thanks for the share mate, very interesting.
