MANILA, Philippines – Fresh graduates from the top four universities in the Philippines may have a better chance of landing a job over graduates from other schools, a survey by Jobstreet.com Philippines showed.
The survey revealed that most of the companies in the Philippines still place high importance on which university the graduates come from.
In the 400 companies surveyed, Jobstreet.com said 77% favor hiring graduates from the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP), University of Sto. Tomas (UST), Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) and De La Salle University (DLSU).
“Education is seen as one indicator. High grades are seen as indicators on how students perform. These four schools represent a quality of education that produces a certain quality of competence that these companies are looking for,” Jobstreet.com Philippines country manager Grace Colet said on Monday.
Colet noted, however, that the figure only reflected preferences of the companies, adding that the majority of fresh graduates are not produced from these four schools.
In 2013, these four schools made it to the Top 300 Asian universities list of the London-based education and career network Quacquarelli Symonds.
State-run UP ranked 67th in the list, followed by private schools Ateneo (109th), UST (150th) and La Salle, which fell under the 151-160 bracket.
The Jobstreet.com survey also showed that 94% of companies are still open to hiring graduates from other schools.
“As much as this is a cause for pride for any graduates of these schools, the employees also said that they do hire applicants from other schools,” marketing services manager Eileen Go said.
Most companies are also favoring graduates from government schools Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Philippine Normal University and Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
The survey said firms are open to hiring fresh graduates not coming from choice universities as long as they are good in English, trainable and dedicated to work hard.
Last year, more than 80% of companies surveyed by Jobstreet.com Philippines hired fresh graduates.
Jobstreet.com advises applicants to highlight internship, grades and extra-curricular activities in their resumes to make up for their lack of experience in the workplace.

Companies who use the alma mater of applicants as a basis for hiring are "whale shit" in my book.
I believe that the competency of an applicant lies not on their school ONLY but on their individual abilities and characteristics and achievements. I've had my share of understudies and those who graduated from the "non-coño" schools are those that are more eager to learn, have better work ethics and have less air inside their heads.

This is stupidity. What if a student is a "Iskul Bukol" type and from a prestigious school mentioned above, would they accept that? It's not about the alma mater, but the real world. How about those who could not afford to study to any of those schools? Well that's not fair especially if a student has good academic records from Mang Kanor's University.

If bago pa lang magwork definitely basis ang school because you know the school but not the applicant. If you know the school at least you have a basis kung ano meron sya skills na natutunan. For example, an engineer, a fresh graduate from mapua and other school, i know mapua is one of the best engineering school so mas favor ako sa graduate dito. But if may experience na at least 2 years, I'll focus on the skill set and experience, secondary ang school. Pero kung tabla sa skill set and experience then mapupunta ulit sa school background

Competency is based from individual but if bagong graduate, you can only prove once competency if nahire mo na. But you are assessing before you will hire the person therefore school matters for the fresh grad because you know the school if they produce a good graduate or provide good trainings.
If you have experience in hiring you know it will matter for fresh grad. I hired my developers and system analysts for my teams before.

Honest answer: Yes. They do care. Especially in PH (or India). But not so much in the US or Europe.
Ideal answer: No.

I'm graduate of Marine Transportation (For Seaman) pero d ko pinursue. Mas hilig ko computers. Nagwowork ako bilang freelancer sa oDesk and ok naman so far. Nasa skills at diskarte yan ng tao. :-\

They should look what applicant can do and contribute within their skillsets regardless whatever schools he/she graduated from...
For those talented from their field but unlucky to find a job in the Phils..there's a lot of oppurtinity abroad so why not try?

if ur GREEN then ur GREEN, if BLUE then BLUE

Age and six matter too kahit may experience ka even looks kahit di naman di requirement sa job yun look.
In other countries, number of school year matters also.
In IT, certificates matters, the projects na nagawa mo also matters because these reflects your skills.
What you wear and look also matters sa interview sa pinas o ibang bansa.

i hate to admit

yup - companies really do factor in where you graduated from.
sa UST ako nun grumaduate. di naman ako valedictorian or honor, average lang. kaya nagtaka ako kung bakit nakatanggap ako ng invitation to join this company sa may bandang salcedo village. well sige pumayag ako. it turns out they only send invites to grads from UST, UP, DLSU tsaka ADMU.
I ended up staying over six years with the company, sa legal department ako una then lumipat sa admin dept. umalis nalang ako sa company nung malapit na akong pumunta dito sa tate.

ito ang masakit na katotohanan na kailangang tanggapin kasi yung mga mayayaman na may-ari ng kompanya marami sa kanila ang graduate sa mga school na exclusive....so ganun talaga... all we can do is hate it but can't really do anything about it to make a big difference kasi i'm sure if not all, lahat tayo proud sa pinanggaling school... same thing with them.... very simple logic

-
Sa call centers ba it matters if you are a graduate of big universities? Parang hindi naman yata. Communication skills takes precedent.
-
pero remember discrimination is legal dyan sa pilipinas. paano kamo? as long as nakikita mo sa mga wanted ads na "wanted ..... male, 21 to 35 yrs old....." or "female.... 21 to 29 yrs old...."
