Title: Essay: What does the Filipino Want?
Post by: Dimmu Borgir on January 17, 2014, 12:32:02 PM
The Filipino desperately declares to the rest of the world that he is the best among the lot, yet the current political, economic, and social states of his country, the mannerisms of his people, and the quality of his thinking prove otherwise.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino claims that being a colony for more than 400 years has been like shackles which keep him tied down. Yet now that he is no longer a colony or protectorate, he runs back to his former masters to give his own life definition.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino desperately wants the rest of the world to validate that his people and his country are respectable and important, yet when given a chance to step up, he squanders it.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino wants certain societal behaviors to be corrected, yet when rules and guidelines are set for him, he cries foul. He cries that his beloved “freedom” is being taken away.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino claims he is always a victim of circumstances, yet when he is given a chance to uplift himself to a better condition, he cries victim even harder and refuses to learn his lesson.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino wants others to understand him because he is “special”, he is “unique”, and he is Filipino. Yet when asked to understand others, he ignores it and resorts to being judgmental and holier-than-thou.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino cries out for change, yet when given suggestions on what needs to be changed, he cries persecution, racism, and lets his balat-sibuyas tendencies take over.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino does not like corruption displayed by his public officials, yet he will not hesitate to bend the rules for his own benefit and convenience.

What does the Filipino want?

The Filipino keeps hoping for a better future, yet when asked to plan for it, you will at best get a blank stare and head scratching.

What does the Filipino want?

Finally, the Filipino does not want a politician who has studied extensively; he is afraid that he/she would use his/her intellect to steal from the country’s coffers. Yet currently he is stuck with a whole bunch of mediocre politicians he himself voted into government, and now he finds himself complaining that they are all corrupt and/or incompetent just the same.

What does the Filipino want?

What the Filipino wants, quite simply, is this:

The Filipino wants to have his cake, and eat it too.

The Filipino wants all of the glory, none of the work.

The Filipino wants his life to get better without lifting a finger.

The Filipino wants to be spoon-fed and taken by the hand.

The Filipino wants to be babied and cajoled by the rest of the world.

The Filipino wants the fruit of hard work to fall from the tree into his gaping mouth.

The Filipino wants respect to be handed to him on a silver platter without the need to reciprocate it.

What does he plan to do about it, you might ask? That’s the problem; he has lived with his laziness so long that he has forgotten what it feels like to get up. He has lived in inhospitable conditions for so long that anything considered merely acceptable in other more developed places is a wonder to him. He has been told, more than once, that it takes discipline, hard work, and sustainable thinking to utilize his environment, his skills, and his resources properly.

The world is changing; Filipinos need to adapt to the ever-changing climate, environment, and times. The time has come for the three-headed dragon of pwede-na-yan, bahala-na, and impunity to lose its heads once and for all.

The Filipino needs to be deconstructed so he can be rebuilt anew, towards a more progressive path.

The Filipino needs to realize that once he changes his attitude, everything else becomes a lot easier.

The Filipino needs to get his act together.

It seems that the author only look what he see's on tv, reads on tabloid, heard on radio, gossip, etc...(anything else?)

What the author described is a typical human, wanting to survive, wanting to live, wanting to grow, wanting more for his life, wanting progress, and wantin a lot more.... but he forgots the trait that Filipinos are famous.... they are great in hospitality, knows the word "utang na loob", values the word "family". What we see in Kamara is just a little percentage of what Filipino is like, what we see there is not just a Filipino trait but a trait of all Politician around the world.

The only reason the Philippines is somewhat below what the other countries standard, is because Filipinos are peace loving people who can oust a government by just marching and saying prayers....who else can do that?

This peace loving heart that each of us Filipinos have, is both a strong trait and a weakness that some  exploit and used for their own gains. Other countries look down on Filipinos, is because we never really react violently towards them to correct them....

But i agree on the author that we should act together, nothing can really beat a united people working for a common goal.....

All I know is kung anong reklamo ni Rizal tungkol sa ating mga pinoy, yun at yun parin ang nanyayari.

Lacks ambition, corrupt people in charge, self-serving, narrow minded, gullible, crab-mentality, petty, elitist, lacks discipline, opportunistic and cruel, easily wowed and dazzled by wealth, subservient attitude towards foreigners, thinking short term and nationalism is in the lacking department. I could go on and on.

I'm also guilty of some of these like the lack of discipline and a dwindling nationalism from time to time because of frustration, I'm not washing my hands here. I just couldn't help but think whenever I go back to his books and read them, that what's happening then is still what's going on now.

Don't get me wrong, madami din tayong magandang katangian, pero kung yung maganda outweighs the cons, hindi siguro tayo ganito kahirap na bansa among our peers.

The social cancer is still very much alive and well in the Philippines, the cure? I really don't know. Pero hindi mawawala yan in one or two lifetimes.

Well majority of our voters/ citizens will fall in this category..  Sad to say if this is  a math equation or a scientific social experiment we can almost say that those traits and characters are consistently "dominant one" an "Average Factor"  thus a reflection    of  almost everyone, even thou some will strongly disagree.
Allow me to  give you some of this disgusting, undisciplined and irresponsible traits of this dominant majority  (pardon me with the exaggeration)

1. Loading / Unloading zone
One of the major cause of traffic particularly in Edsa, yet  we blame traffic to the government, citing their lack of rules and actions.

2. RH BILL
Well I'm not a full dive christian warrior who wouldn't want this to death for the sake of Morality.. But my eyes have already seen  a lot and that's  enough!! neglectful parents, letting their kids  to roam the streets begging for food or money, sleeping in stairs and side walks. Thoughtless Life givers..( these are the ones who shouldn't be allowed to multiply)

3.Garbage Disposal
The only good thing about the deadly typhoon Ondoy? The only time  that we have realized the truth about the phrase "Basurang tinapon mo babalik sayo".. Yes the typhoon was really that strong to  flood the whole metro manila, but we can't help  blaming the clogged waterways / canals, created by mindless disposal of garbage.

iba ang pinoy, kapag may problema dumadamay, kapag walang problema, kanya kanya....ang pinoy tapon dito tapon duon ng basura, kapag may baha na sasabihin naman na wag magtatapon ng basura sa kung saan... BOTTOM LINE: We Filipinos lack discipline in general...
