MANILA, Philippines - Wondering why television news anchor Arnold Clavio is trending on social media?

He caught the ire of not a few people because of the way he conducted an interview on television with Atty Alfredo Villamor, the lawyer of alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles.

In the interview, Clavio got frustrated that Villamor, who said he represented Napoles only for her serious illegal detention case, was not in the position to answer questions regarding the pork barrel scam.

"Sino na ho ba dapat talaga ang kausapin namin dito?" asked Clavio. (Who should we talk to?)

"When it comes to the serious illegal detention case po, as I've said, ako po 'yung lawyer. Pagdating po sa PDAF, hindi po ako ang abogado..." replied Villamor. (When it comes to the serious illegal detention case, as I've said, I am the lawyer. When it comes to the PDAF, I am not the lawyer.)

Abogado kayo 'dun? (Villamor tried to speak) Binago ko na nga. Tatawa-tawa ka pa." (That's why I went back. You're a day ruiner. That's why I'm saying on the serious illegal detention case, attorney... Are you her official representative? Are you her lawyer for that? ... I changed it. You're even laughing."

Netizens thought he was "#medyorude" (a bit rude) and "#medyobadboy" (a bit of a bad boy) to the lawyer.

Rappler did a quick search on social media listening tool Radian6 and found out that the online sentiment is mostly negative.

well im not arnold clavio fan pero in the first place bakit yun ang attorney ang humarap sa kanya where the fact na magtatanong ang media about sa pagdalo nya sa senado concerning PDAF......

nagkamali ng napagtanungan si clavio but to have that tirade to an attorney in public.. its obnoxious.....

that wasn't just rude, that was also some seriously sloppy journalism. una nga dahil mali ang kinakausap about a subject na gustong i-discuss tapos nung nilinaw nung abogado ang sitwasyon eh mali mali ang tanong at pagtatanong.
palagay ko to may naka set na questions si arnold clavio tapos nagulat na mali ang taong kausap. in frustration for the f_ck up, he tried to control the situation and panicked when he couldn't so he ended up bullying the lawyer.

Agreed, that was uncalled for. Noon ko pa pansin medyo mahangin nga itong reporter na ito, but this time he really made a fool out of himself.

I understand lawyers tend to be evasive and slick and mahirap hulihin, but I didn't get that impression from the lawyer at all. The reporter on the other hand was very abrasive.

I dislike Napoles and her cronies immensely pero to be rude and show your bias while in the guise of journalism? Come on. BBC world has a show titled "Hard talk" the questions usually are straight to the point and at times medyo insensitive, but these are legitimate questions that usually no one is in a better position to answer than the one being interviewed.

Now you're just giving these guys undeserved sympathy because you couldn't control yourself. Genius.

This looks a lot like bullying and pandering to the public's dislike for Napoles and her henchmen.

In short, a cheap shot.

That's the problem these days, every Tom, Dick and Harry has an opinion. Pag journalist ka, learn to keep those personal feelings bottled up and mag report ka kung ano ang facts, nobody cares about your opinion not unless your show is about that and specifically asked for.

If tagilid ka in the public eye, you should now know better whom to grant your interviews, mahirap talaga pag pa bida ang kausap mo.

Arnold Clavio on Villamor interview: 'I went beyond my limits'

MANILA, Philippines – News anchor Arnold Clavio admitted he went beyond his limits when he interviewed Janet Lim-Napoles' lawyer Alfredo Villamor in the GMA7 morning news show "Unang Hirit."

Clavio asked the public for understanding, two days after his interview sparked social media outrage.

In the November 7 telephone interview, Villamor told Clavio he represented Napoles only for her serious illegal detention case. He said he was not in the position to answer any questions related to the pork barrel scam. Clavio demanded to know who could answer questions, and interrupted Villamor when he said it was another lawyer.

Clavio then said Villamor had ruined his day, and continued to interrupt as Villamor reiterated again he was not the lawyer for the PDAF cases. In a tone that seemed both contemptuous and sarcastic, Clavio informed Villamor that the question had already been changed to the serious illegal detention case, and then censured Villamor for what sounded like nervous laughter at the other end of the line. "And you're even laughing?"

'The only laywer we knew'

In his statement, Clavio said that Villamor was the only lawyer that they knew remained Napoles' counsel that the program had hoped to extract as much information as possible about the hearing.

The anchor said his actions were driven by his desire to provide the public with information regarding alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles' senate hearing. He did not explicitly apologize, although he admitted to the possibility he may have overstepped boundaries.

The following is the text of his short statement.

(To the viewers of GMA7, to all those who watched my interview last Tuesday, my only intention was, the same as for all of you, to acquire information from Atty Alfredo Villamor regarding Ms. Janet Lim-Napoles' visit to the senate.

As of now, he is the only laywer we know who remains to defend Janet Lim-Napoles, and it is why he is the only man we spoke to in the hope we could extract information about the said senate hearing.

In my intense determination to find the story, I admit I went beyond my limitations, and I ask for understanding if there was anything I said that was out of place.)

Public furor

On the day of the interview, netizens cried foul, saying Clavio's actions were "rude" and "unprofessional. "Arnold Clavio" trended on Twitter, along with hashtags "#medyorude" (a bit rude) and "#medyobadboy" (a bit of a bad boy).

Vice Ganda fires back

The following day, rival Abs-cbn's noontime variety show featured a spoof by comedian Vice Ganda. He pretended to argue with a lawyer about the ownership of a car.

Earlier this year, Clavio scolded the comedian after Vice Ganda performed a rape joke aimed at GMA7 News Head Jessica Soho.

This was not the first time Clavio has been at the center of social media anger. In 2012, also on "Unang Hirit," Clavio criticized members of the Azkals, the national football team.

He said the players were only pretending to be brown-skinned, and were not genuine Filipinos.
