Title: Hepatitis - Types And Management
Post by: fayt on August 13, 2013, 03:10:04 PM
The word hepatitis has originated from an ancient greek word 'hepar' or 'hepat' which means liver. In latin, '-itis' is the suffix used to indicated inflammation. Thus Hepatitis would mean an inflammation of the liver cells.

The significance of hepatitis relates directly to that of liver, the largest gland in the human body. Apart from doing the primary function of detoxification from the harmful substances, including alcohol, from the blood, liver cells are known to store Vitamins A, D, K and B12. Liver also stores minerals and plays a significant role in protein synthesis. It helps in maintaining regular glucose levels in the blood by storing and releasing glucose as per the need. It helps in decomposing red-blood cells and in production of various hormones. Considering all the above jobs, it becomes really necessary to have our liver working in optimum balance to keep our entire system running in healthy speed.

In most of the cases, hepatitis may not cause any noticeable symptoms. Thus it may go undiagnosed as well. A patient may not even know that he has got infected. However, when presented, the usual symptoms of hepatitis include a feeling of sickness with dull muscle ache and joint pains, fever, headache and the most commonly known sign of yellowish appearance of skin and eyes, popularly known as jaundice. There is a feeling of unusual tiredness, which can lead to a feeling of depression if not taken care in time.

The main types of Hepatitis are:

Hepatitis A - which is more common in countries where the sanitation and sewage disposal is poorly maintained. It spreads by contamination of food and water with the feces of an infected person. It is an acute infection that remains for short period.

Hepatitis B - the virus of which is found in blood and bloody fluids like semen and vaginal secretions. It can be spread during unprotected six or by sharing needles or due to improper blood transfusion.

Hepatitis C - is transmitted through blood to blood contact. The virus can be isolated from body fluids, including saliva.

Hepatitis D - is seen only in patients suffering with Hepatitis B.

Hepatitis E - is a type that manifest as a mild and short-term infection and is spread just like that of the Hepatitis-A variety.

Alcoholic hepatitis - it has become one of the most common forms of hepatitis. As the name suggests, it comes after a prolonged period of alcohol consumption and usually shows marked manifestations as per the degree of hepatic failure.

Treatment:

There is no specific treatment once the diagnosis is established with presence of virus in blood serum. But a well selected homeopathic medicine can not only relieve the patient from the presenting symptoms but also aids in preventing the cellular damage and further liver-failure. Remedies like chelidonium, cardus marr and lycopodium have shown great results in cases with subjective as well as objective symptomatologies.
