New research suggests that vitamin D can boost both male and female fertility. The study was based on previous fertility research of couples who live in climates where the winters are long and dark. These couple tended to conceive in summer months when bright sunshine was abundant; prompting research which suggests that exposure to sunlight boosts fertility by increasing their levels of vitamin D. Men and women undergoing expensive fertility treatments may find spending time in the sun is the answer to their problems.
We already know that vitamin D helps boost the levels of progesterone and estrogen in women, and now we know that vitamin D also improves semen quality and sperm count in men. This miracle vitamin also increases testosterone and improves libido in men.
If you’re struggling with infertility make sure you get plenty of sunshine and take supplements or eat vitamin D rich foods if your vitamin D level is low. The vitamin D receptor has been found in the testes and sperm in men, and in the ovaries and placenta in women. No one vitamin can make a signifigant impact on fertility but increased vitamin D combined with other healthy lifestyle changes may help and it cannot hurt.
