The rhythm method of birth control means that people plan their sixual activities so they do not coincide with the times the woman is fertile. Basically, it is abstinence from six during ovulation and several days before and after since sperm can live inside the female body for 5-7 days.
For women with irregular periods, the rhythm method is not very effective as a contraceptive. It’s effectiveness ranges from 75% to 85%, far less than other methods such as the birth control pill and the condom. The rhythm method is most effect for women who have extremely regular menstrual cycles. Unlike the condom, the rhythm method does not protect against sixually transmitted diseases.
Some couples choose the rhythm method for religious reasons, while other couples see it as an inexpensive, natural birth control with no side effects. This method does not change a woman’s fertility, she can safely become pregnant as soon as this method is abandoned.
