The Coaching Into Care Program offers the family and friends of Veterans free, confidential help in finding appropriate mental health care and motivating their Veteran who needs help to get help.
In the United States, there is still a stigma attached to having mental health problems and veterans, the majority of whom are men, are often reluctant to let anyone know about any problems they are facing.
Common problems, especially among combat veterans include post-traumatic stress and depression. It’s almost always the family who notices these issues first and the Coaching Into Care Program offers useful tips on how to begin the conversation with a Veteran. People who call should expect to be on the phone for up to a half an hour.
Family members and friends of veterans who obviously were facing difficult issues can call 888-823-7458 toll free for assistance in trying to encourage their Veteran to seek mental health care.
Again, the call is confidential and your veteran will not be forced into any program. however, if the VA representative feels a veteran is posing an immediate danger to his or herself or their family, the VA will notify the appropriate local officials.
