Depression is a problem among our elderly citizens that often goes unrecognized and untreated. There are many reasons that depression may set in; the death of a spouse or chronic health or financial problems are common causes.
depressed elderly manClinical depression is a problem that affects all aspects of life. We tend to dismiss depression in our elderly friends and relatives because we attribute their state to grief, an understandable emotion if someone just lost a spouse or was diagnosed with a debilitating condition.
Distinguishing between grief and clinical depression isn’t always easy. With depression, the feelings of emptiness and despair are constant while grief tends to be more of a roller coaster with feelings of depression interspersed with happiness and joy. In grief, the bad times become fewer and fewer over time while depression is a constant state of hopelessness.
Depression at any age is important to diagnose and treat through psychotherapy or medications. Antidepressants do work for the elderly, as do lifestyle changes such as a proper diet, increased outside activities with other people and physical exercise. If you know someone who is elderly and depressed, urge the to seek mental health treatment. The elderly have some of the highest suicide rates in the nation, possibly because few elderly persons ever seek treatment for depression.
