Heart attacks are a major concern for both older men and older women. Recognizing the common warning symptoms of a heart attack can save lives and prevent disabilities because when a heart attack occurs, any delays in treatment can be fatal. Acting quickly at the first sign of heart attack symptoms can save your life and limit damage to your heart.
Heart attack symptoms include:
Mild to severe chest pain or pressure, in the center or left side of the chest.
Pain in one or both arms, the back, neck or jaw
Shortness of breath
Nausea or vomiting
Sudden dizziness
Breaking out in a cold sweat
A feeling of doom or extreme anxiety
Some heart attacks are sudden and people are certain what is happening but most heart attacks start slowly, with only mild pain or discomfort. Often people who are having a heart attack mistake the symptoms for heartburn and they wait too long before getting help.
If one or more of these heart attack symptoms for more than five minutes — call for medical help immediately. Do not drive to the hospital, call an ambulance so that medical personnel can begin life-saving treatment immediately.
