The Philippines has defeated China, this time in a Math competition, in a recent global contest joined by some 1,300 students.
The Philippine delegation to the International Mathematics Contest (IMC) in Singapore took home 161 medals in the tilt held until August 4 in Singapore.
Math wizards from Philippine schools bested participants from 10 other countries, winning 23 gold medals, 45 silver medals and 93 bronze medals in the IMC, ending China's dominance.
China, which has dominated the competition for several years, only won 22 gold, 4 silver and 87 bronze medals this year.
A Filipino student, Jan Kendrick Ong of Chiang Kai Shek College, also emerged as the top scorer in the Grade 8 division.
Ranked after Philippines and China were Singapore, with 124 medals, Taiwan, 117 medals and Indonesia, with 93 medals.
Weeks before the IMC in Singapore, the Philippines also won seven medals in the China Southeast Mathematical Olympiad.
It also topped the Environmental Math Competition 2013 in Hongkong, bagging 401 medals including 66 golds.
A delegation of Filipino students also won 44 medals in the Bulgaria International Mathematics Competition in July.
“This year is emerging as very fruitful for our young math wizards,” said Simon Chua, head of the Philippine delegation and president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild.
“The medals won in Singapore are in addition to the medals and awards we won in math contests in Bulgaria, Turkey, China and Hong Kong,” he added.
