A bus ban is not enough to improve vehicle flow in the country’s capital, a former Manila mayor told incumbent Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada.
Former Manila mayor, now Buhay party-list Rep. Jose “Lito” Atienza said Estrada’s government should do massive clearing operations in the streets around the capitol.
“We really need better management on traffic flow not just in Manila but in the entire Metro Manila,” Atienza said.
“There are lots of things that should follow (that move like) clearing all the streets of debris, of stalled cars and stop the illegal use of narrow roads,” the lawmaker added.
Atienza lamented how many residents had managed to turn narrow roads into instant parking spaces, which had been contributing to severe traffic jams in Manila City.
The former Environment Secretary however noted that he supports Estrada’s efforts to improve the traffic condition in the Philippine capital.
“I support it. Mayor Erap has a good program but Vice Mayor Moreno gave a wrong plan for implementation,” Atienza said.
Atienza public convenience should have been prioritized before implementing drastic changes in public transportation in the city.
“That’s the only thing I don’t agree about. They should have made the changes gradually because it only affected those who depend on buses for transportation,” Atienza said.
But this, Atienza emphasized, should not stop authorities from changing traffic schemes in Manila.
Last week, Estrada ordered buses that do not have terminals inside Manila from entering the city in a bid to lessen traffic around the Philippine capital.
But the move only forced commuters to walk long distances before they can take jeepneys as the new scheme banned buses along Espana.
Commuter complaints about discomfort and heavy build-up in areas near Manila City boundaries prompted Estrada to tweak his ban on “colorum” buses last Monday.
Passenger buses with a franchise can now enter Manila City under certain conditions temporarily.

Atienza once mayor of manila have the gutz to tell this to estrada and morena, while during his time don't really made an effort to lift a finger in reducing traffic jam in manila? Minsan natatawa na lang talaga ako sa mga politician, just to be known at mapansin eh magko-comment ng kung anu-ano... i don't have a problem with that pero sana balikan muna nila ang nakaraan bago sila mag-comment kasi baka mag-backfire sa kanila ito basta lang mapansin ng tao..... using the sentiment of people to do his bidding....tsk, tsk, tsk... good strategy, hope people will not buy it....

Agree with you sir imoy. This is a common behavior of all politicians. Erap noticed this traffic issue along the city so he implemented something to reduce it. Good start, but let's see how far he could go from here. On the other hand, during Atienza's reign, I think he only cared about some tourist spots or something. Any Manileno here who could comment out? I seldom go to Manila area, but as far as I know, Atienza only focused on that like the Baywalk improvement, or whatsoever. No offense here for anyone who knows how Atienza did his part as a leader of the city. Just my two cents.

Hope Erap does well, cause the place really sucks balls. Ang traffic, ang kalat and andaming krimen. Problema kasi jaan kaya walang ma implement ng maayos bolahan ng bolahan yung mga nasa pwesto. You're doing a good job mayor, commendation from malacañang mayor, we will be featuring your city mayor. BS. It sucks.

No one did a good job. At best it's mediocre. Manila needs some sort of strong arm sa totoo lang dahil napaka unruly.
The city planner sucked. Streets are narrow and structures are built next to the roads. Come on.
Just a brain fart, pero I would be ecstatic pag dumating na ang time at may subway na jan.
Anyway what do I know, I'm not an Engineer nor an Architect. All I know is people should be expecting more from their elected leaders, don't settle for mediocrity. Expect more, ask for more and don't stop asking for more. Problema nila yan, tumakbo sila eh.

Nawala na kasi ang mga estero natin, malalapad daw yun nuong araw pero tinambakan.
Kelangan ng Manila is vertical apartments. Di ko rin maintindihan bakit hindi gawin ito ng gubyerno sa mga squatters (not that I want to reward squatters for doing something illegal) to curb yung practice na lilipat sa subdivision sa malayong probinsya, ibebenta ang bahay dun, balik squat sa Manila.
Kelangan talaga e condo style sa manila to free up a lot of space for parks, playgrounds, etc.

I know they have good intentions of doing provincial bus ban in the metro. Im just worried about the elders who cannot go up to the bridge, the additional allowance that will be coming out from our pockets especially to the students and the lack of manila buses especially sa coastal road! It's been a week of a very stressful travel. Sana i-review pa nila ung system.
It's really more fun in the Philippines!
By the way, one of my stressful morning this week. For the first time, I was able to walk along the Coastal Road and tried to cross the bridge just to take a bus going to Ayala. Poor me.

Like the provincial bus, tama na pag pasok nila ng manila dun lang sila magbababa sa terminal nila. Tawag diyan sa ibang bansa e express or coach.
Ngayon, gusto ng babaan for an efficient public transport, bus pa rin ang sagot. May interval lang ang baba, at may oras. Like let say from manila city hall ang unloading post e dyan sa may pader ni andres bonifacio, sa quiapo, then sa lerma, then sa kanto ng lacson. Ganun ang interval. Pag pasok ng pasahero after 2 minutes, aalis na ang bus kahit di pa puno. After 6 to 10 minutes darating na ang same bus na same route.
Kung pupunta kayo ng south korea o london ganun ang sistema. Ang nakakababa lang kahit saan? Taxi ka. Pero in between unloading post, lakad ka.
Sariwa pa ang sistema na yan, but it's a step in the right direction. Kailangan lang ma i place maige ang spacing sa loading/unloading post/shed/area at interval ng times ng bus. Kailangan din bawasan ang mga jeeps at bus at lahat by oras.
Dun lang aayos ang sistema diyan, ngayon kung iisipin natin ang kabuhayan of each and every Filipino people, then expect us to be a third world country for the next 1000 generations.

I agree on this Sir. However, bago pa man nila na-implement yung new system, sana lahat ng angles eh pinag-aralan. Like sa experience ko, syempre bababa kami sa pinakamabilis na way na kung saan hindi naman pinagbabawal. Kaya lang nakataya ang safety namin dito. Nadagdagan ng 30 mins ang byahe ko lol buti na lang flexible oras ko. D naman lagi available ang service ng office. Buti na lang mabilis ako maglakad. :-X

Patse patse kasi ang implentasyon kaya ang sistema di mabuo. Pero kung gusto ng maluwag na daan at safe kelangan talaga buong sistema at di patse patse. Kasi pag patse patse nakita di maganda sa una, ise shelve ang buong sistema kahit maganda in the long run. Di naman tayo na kelangan mag isip ng orihinal na sistema kasi pwede namang mang gaya.

I second to this. Sanay lang talaga mga Noypi na kung saan gusto bumaba eh dun bababa.
Ang dapat praktisin ngayon ng mga Noypi ay ang maglakad ng mabilis at hindi yung parang namamasyal sa Luneta para hindi ma late sa eskwela o trabaho.

Paraan siguro dito ay dapat Government na mismo ang nag mamay ari ng mga public Transpo like buses and jeeps. Tapos swelduhan is monthly na para hindi sila muntanga na mag aagawan sa pasahero tapos gagawin nilang Terminal bawat kanto na madadaanan nila kaya traffic e. :-\

totoo naman. actually ang kailangan talaga improve is the public transport system. ang ginagawa nila eh iniimprove ang flow ng traffic para sa private vehicles. eh ilang tao ba nag cocommute vs. nag ddrive? at kung lahat ng tao magdadala ng auto di hamak na kahit ilang bus pa ban nila hindi mawawala ang traffic.
dapat improve ang public transport ng mahikayat din ang mga middle class na gamitin ito instead of driving. nakatipid na sa gas, less traffic pa.

Tumitira pa wala na sa serbisyo hindi kasi nya naisip ni atienza yan. Sana ipagpatuloy ni erap ang bus ban inumpisahan nya at ng MMDA, at sana maalis narin ang mga lumang bus at PUJ at iba pa. Para mabawasan narin ang polusyon sa manila at buong pilipanas.

What irks me is that they keep on thinking of all these "creative" new ideas to improve traffic when they should just be optimizing first the measures which are already in place. Siguraduhin lang nila na pag no loading and unloading, ganun talaga. Pag sinabing no parking, wala talaga mag park. Pag no vendeors, no vendors talaga. No exception kahit tricycle man yan or pedicab.
Ngayon kung okay na mga batas na yun at kulang pa rin eh saka kay mag dagdag.

hindi lang bus ang nagcacause ng traffic, tao rin. yung mga nagaabang kung saan saan. Ang mga gumagawa nun yung mga tamad na ayaw maglakad at pumila. Para maging efficient ang bus dapat may fixed bus stops like sa ayala avenue. nagkakatraffic lang sa ayala dahil over capacity na ang ayala, hindi na ma widen ang kalsada na iyon.
