Owing to his championship experience, Ato Agustin was named the new head coach of Barangay Ginebra albeit on an interim basis yesterday while former mentor Alfrancis Chua was designated as the team's new manager.
Agustin's appointment was announced by no less than San Miguel Corporation (SMC) President and COO Ramon S. Ang when the players and coaches made a courtesy call at SMC headquarters in Ortigas.
He earned the nod of San Miguel top honcho because of his vast coaching experience. Agustin was the former coach of PBL champion team Excelroof and San Sebastian in the NCAA.
The former MVP takes over the coaching reins of the country's most popular ball club just three weeks after joining the squad from Petron, a team he steered to the championship in his maiden stint during the 2011-12 season.
Chua, who replaced current PBA Board of Governors chairman, shocked PBA fans when he resigned last week but was prevailed upon to take a leave of absence.
The pony-tailed Chua, who helped Ginebra advance to the finals of the Commissioner's Cup despite a poor start, was present during the meeting with Ang.
Chua reportedly stepped down because of his disappointment on several management decisions without his knowledge.
Prior to his new appointment, Agustin was one of three new assistant coaches of Ginebra.
Agustin will have in his coaching staff Art dela Cruz, Freddie Abuda, George Gallent and Boysie Zamar.

naguguluhan talaga ako sa PBA lalong lalo na sa 3 teams ng SMC. Every conference na lang, palitan ng coach, assistant coaches, players. Kaya minsan parang di na magandang manood ng PBA. >:(

let's see kung ano ang gagawin ni agustin para ma-improve ang laro ng Ginebra... i hope its a good thing though...

Also noticed this that there is a rotation on coaching staff. Ato is a great coach. He lead the Blaze Boosters to championship. Hope he could do it again on Ginebra. Let's give him a chance.

sayang ung momentum ng BGSM, ganda na sana ng simula ni al chua, baka mawala na naman ung NSD attitude ng mga players...... :'(

Yup Sir, momentum is a factor. Adjustment is both on players and how Ato could lead them. Alfrancis Chua did a great job though last conference even if they were swept by Alaska in finals. Another challenge awaits the Gin Kings.
