MANILA, Philippines – For Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, a knockout loss by Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao at the hands of Brandon Rios in their November bout in Macau would mean it’s time to hang up his gloves.
Roach told renowned boxing writer Kevin Iole in a story on Yahoo! Sports that he would “recommend” to call it a career if the former pound-for-pound fighter in the world suffers what would be his third consecutive defeat after dropping a controversial decision to Timothy Bradley Jr. and getting knocked out cold by Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez in their fourth encounter in December last year.
“It’s over, 100 percent [if Pacquiao is knocked out by Rios],” Roach told Iole. “We have a deal. When I tell him it’s over, he’ll say it’s over and that’s it. He’s pretty loyal with his words and if that happens, it will be the end.”
Roach also said that despite absorbing two losses in his last couple of fights, Pacquiao still has not “shown signs of decline.”
“None whatsoever and I’d tell you if I did,” Roach said. “The thing is, people look at the losses and they think the reason is that he’s getting old. That’s not the case, not from what I see. Look, we all thought he beat Bradley, so throw that out. And in the Marquez fight, I thought he was doing well and was looking like he was going to win by knockout when he made a mistake and ran into a shot.”
“That happens. That’s boxing. It didn’t happen because his skills aren’t the same as they used to be. It happened because he made a mistake. It doesn’t matter what age you are, you can make a mistake.”
Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs) will be close to turning 35 when he returns to the ring against the 27-year-old Rios (31-1-1, 23 KOs), who is coming off a loss in a rematch with Mike Alvarado via unanimous decision last March.
Talks of a mega-fight between Pacquiao and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. have died down since Pacquiao’s shocking sixth round defeat to Marquez but Roach thinks dominating Rios in their welterweight bout would open it once more.
“I think the gap is widening, I don’t agree with that,” Roach said. “But that being said, I’ve told Manny, ‘Knock this guy [Rios] out in good fashion and the Mayweather fight comes back real quick.”
“Manny still wants the fight. We know that Mayweather turned it down, but the truth is this: Mayweather has four fights left after this next one [on Sept. 14 against Canelo Alvarez] and I’m not sure there are four guys in the world left for him to fight without Manny Pacquiao being one of them.”

agree ako.... kasi wala na siyang maikakatwiran pa.... marami na naman siyang kinita sa boxing at marami na siyang negosyo... siguro its better for him to consentrate sa napili niyang propesyon(politics)...total he's doing good naman doon.

Yeah I agree. It's easy to say he should have quit while he was on top, and make no mistake. I emphasize the word "was". I wouldn't call him a "has been" just yet, pero if he wouldn't take his craft as seriously as he once did, eh dun na nga siya papunta.
Anyway I hope manalo siya, syempre bias ako dahil kababayan ko ito, regardless of my opinion tungkol sa pag sali niya oh ng pamilya niya sa politics. It's an entirely different matter.
You guys are right, if matalo siya ulit, he should really retire, after all he has the money.
But this isn't bowing gracefully. That train is long gone by now. Bowing gracefully is when he was the champ, and almost legendary. That is no longer the case.
Even that maggot Mayweather was obviously threatened by him even probably as recent as a year ago or so? Ewan ko lang ngayon. The air of Pacquiao invincibility is definitely no longer there.
More and more younger boxers will be gunning for his head lalo na when it becomes obvious he has become an easy target, so it's best to just save his ass if ganun na nga ang manyari.
Sayang naman ang legacy niya, kung sa bandang huli ng career niya puro talo na.
Pero bata pa si Pacman, if for some reason he bounces back, aba mas maganda. Malabo labo yoon, dahil iba na talaga siya ngayon compared to the man we saw 5-6 years ago. Pero hindi impossible.

Pacquiao should have focused on his boxing career. sana hindi na lang muna siya nag congressman.. Ayan tuloy.. but still, i still support him.. another loss nga lang then its time to throw in the towel..

Brandon Rios is a dangerous fighter, talagang may tulog si cong dito. And I agree with Freddie Roach, a 3rd straight loss for Manny is a bitter pill to swallow for all of Team Pacquiao and fans alike, and he should retire from boxing for good.

well kahit siguro draw ang maging resulta if he seem will not regaining another glory from his fight dapat magbitiw na sya. Anyway, he already achieved all the glory of a boxer can achieve..

Sana nga gawin nya talaga kung matalo( kahit hindi K.O) na mag resign sya. Mag pokus na lang sa pagiging pulitiko.

Manalo o matalo maging proud pa rin tayo sa kanya. Kahit manalo siya kay Rios, mag-retiro na lang din siya.

may hype ba etong laban nila rios? i personally parang hindi na excited makita lumaban si pacman, pakiramdam ko kasi wala na yung passion niya sa sport. still i'll support him at sana manalo siya para makabawi naman nung eleksyon este nung last fight niya kay marquez. at kung sa retirement naman, para sa akin dapat nagretire na siya after nung fight niya kay margarito or mosley.

Dapat kasi nagstick na lang siya sa boxing. Buti na lang wala ng show yan sa ch7 istorbo lang yun imbes na nagpapahinga/training siya magshoshow pa. At sana di muna siya nagpolitika dahil sa oras na magretire siya wala na siyang ibang gagawin e di sana dun na lang sana siya nagfocus.
Mukang malaki ata epekto ng suntok ni marquez sa kanya gusto pa tumakbo for president.
Pero pwede pa siya lumaban kahit matalo siya kay rios. Labanan niya si mayweather kahit 75-25 na lang hatian dami naman siyang talo tapos higa na lang siya sa 1st or 2nd round gaya ng ginawa ni hatton para makuha yun pera
