Watermelon is being called “the new Viagra” by some experts. It seems watermelon’s benefit is based on citrulline, an amino acid that relaxes and dilates blood vessels much like Viagra. Citrulline is converted into the amino acid arginine which is a precursor for nitric oxide, and the nitric oxide is what helps in blood vessel dilation.
Citrulline is a phyto-nutrient, a naturally occurring compound that reacts with the human body. In this case, citrulline produces what we would call a good reaction. It was previously thought that most of watermelon’s citrulline was contained in the rind but studies not show the edible part of a watermelon is rich in the amino acid.
It’s important to note that men with erectile dysfunction are not deficient in the amino acid arginine. There are many psychological and physiological problems that can cause ED. Watermelon will not cure ED nor are researchers sure how much watermelon it would take to see noticeable Viagra-like effects.
Still, men can benefit from choosing watermelon over a sugary desert at a picnic as watermelon has vitamin C and contains large amounts of beta carotene. Watermelon is also low in calories. If eating watermelon makes a man feel like he can achieve an erection, he may jut do so if the problem was psychological. A cure without any drug side effects (and added nutrition) cannot hurt.
