ILAS Pilipinas team manager Butch Antonio said on Thursday the national team is dropping plans for friendlies with Japan while setting its sight on playing a series of tune-up matches possibly against squads in the NBA Summer League from July 4-11 in Las Vegas.

Gilas was originally set to fly to Tokyo to play a series of tune-up games from June 27 to July 1, but those plans changed after the result of the draw which will have the Fiba-Asia Men's Championship hosts most likely meeting Japan in the second stage of the eliminations.

“Mahirap na kung ka-grupo (ang Japan). And in the first place, we never really confirmed (Gilas' participation in Japan). There was an invitation coursed through SBP (Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas), pero sa ganung sitwasyon na makaka-grupo natin ang Japan, understood na yun,” Antonio told Spin.ph via an overseas call from Klaipeda City in Lithuania.

The Gilas coaching staff chose to be in Group A during last week’s Fiba Asia draw, joining 2011 tournament runner-up Jordan, Chinese-Taipei and Saudi Arabia.

The top three teams after the first round advance to the second phase of elimination, where they will eventually face the top three of Group B composed of Japan, Qatar, Lebanon and Hong Kong.

Gilas is currently winding its two-week training camp and tune-up matches against club teams and the Lithuanian 20-and-under team in Palanga, Lithuania.

Antonio said Gilas will resume their practice upon their return to Manila before flying either on July 4 or July 5 to Las Vegas to play between four to five tune-up games.

“There won’t be any other training, just tune-up games. We’ll try to get to play against teams since magkaka-NBA Summer league na dun by that time. The coaching staff is now connecting with their contacts there to arrange the tune-up games,” said the Gilas Pilipinas team manager.

The Gilas squad was forced to look for an alternative tournament after Taiwan organizers withdrew their invitation to the Philippines to defend its title in the annual William Jones Cup.

An Unclear Situation for the Lebanese National Team - Jun 12, 2013

POSTED BY:
ASIA-BASKET LEBANON

Asia-Basket's Articles

The Lebanese National Team is facing an unclear situation for the first time since the rising of Lebanese Basketball in 1998. The Federation didnt assemble yet the National Team. The preparation plan consist only on a participation in the Jones Cup ( FLB didnt confirm the participation yet) .

The federation had a meeting two days ago and called coach Ghassan Sarkis for a meeting from which nothing came out. Fadi El Khatib the National Team star is not joining the team this week , Julien Khazzouh left to Australia , many other players are demanding not to join the team in this situation.

Lebanon a power in the Asian Basketball since 2001 , finishing 2nd in three FIBA ASIA Championships ( 2001, 2005,2007) and 4th in 2003,2009 is losing ground to other countries , in 2011 the Team sent to Wuhan was a combination of young players didnt had enough experience and maturity to continue the good results , the roster missed around 8 important players , Lebanon finished 8th in the ranking and for the first time outside the best 4 teams since 2001.

Lebanon is facing same situation this year also , due to very unreasonable decisions many players are not willing to join or some will not be called and with no budget and no preparation plan the team will have a very bad FIBA ASIA Championship. A strong championship will build a very strong National Team but this formula is not working in Lebanon.

CHN - Boomers down China in a humdinger, take lead in You-Yi series

TIANJIN, China (27th FIBA Asia Championship): The Australian Boomers won their second successive game, this one on Chinese soil, beating China 68-65 in a cliffhanger of a contest and took a 2-1 lead in the You-Yi Games on Wednesday. China had won 61-55 in Game 1 and the Aussies had bounced back 85-50 in Game 2 in the first two games played at Perth (Australia) last week. Game 4 of this annual series is scheduled for Friday at Yongcheng.

China who fell behind by as many as 10 points in the first half did rather well to rally and level the scores with 6 minutes to play.

But Luke Nevill the most consistent player for the Aussies in this series and Anthony Petrie – the latter accounting for 10 of his 14 points in the final quarter – came up with late to ensure victory for the visitors.

Zhang Bo’s 13 points, in 4/5 field shooting led China’s scoring. Lia Xiaoyu added a dozen points.

China, aiming to retain their gold medal won at the 26th FIBA Asia Championship at Wuhan (China) in 2011, are drawn alongside big guns Iran, Korea and a team yet to qualify from SEABA in Group D for the Prelim Round of the competition for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila (Philippines) from Aug 1-11. Draw for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship.

PHI - Philippines win back to back against Lithuania U20 team

KLAIPEDA, Lithuania (27th FIBA Asia Championship): The Philippine National Team preparing for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila from Aug 1-11 won back to back against the Lithuanian U20 team in their final phase of training in Lithuania.

Philippines have opted to play alongside Saudi Arabia, Chinese Taipei and Jordan in Group A of the Prelim Round competition at the Draw for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship.

The Chot Reyes-trained team, known as Gilas Pilipinas, took a 30-22 lead and powered on to post an 83-75 win. Jayson Castro’s 14 points was the highest for Philippines, while naturalized center Marcus Douthit added a dozen points.

In the second game, Philippines fell back 15-25 at the end of the first quarter but rallied splendidly for the remainder of the game to go for an 88-84 triumph.

Douthit led Philippines’ rally with 27 points with Gary David adding 18 points. Ranidel De Ocampo had a dozen points.

The Philippines play two more games in Lithuania before returning home for a short break.

Reyes and his team expressed their appreciation for training with Lithuanian coach Kestutis Kemzura terming the experience as rich.

“Pretty sad to part ways with Coach K,” said Reyes. “Thanks for the 10 days. Learned a LOT!” he said on his twitter account.

“Always an honor to learn from a great mind and a legendary coach here in Lithuania. Thanks Coach K,” said veteran playmaker Jimmy Alapag.

“We were lucky enough to get 10 days of training and lessons from one of the best in the business. (Not the city…but the world,” said Gabe Norwood.

“The key I think that the national players gained here in Lithuania is to have that chemistry on and off the court,” said manager of the team Butch Antonio.

“Of course, the team also learned valuable lessons not just during the games, but also during training sessions under former Lithuania national coach Kestutis Kemzura. Also, coach Chot has several off-court activities, which builds of the relationships of the players” he added.

Meanwhile it was confirmed that the senior Philippines team would not travel to Japan for the Charity Games later this month. Instead a select Philippine cadet team will take part in the three games aimed at raising funds for the Great Earthquake.

The seniors under Reyes are scheduled to travel to Las Vegas on July 4 to play four exhibition games against American college teams.

“We scheduled four games, but hopefully we can get some more. That’s the goal, get more games for the national team<” Antonio said.

PHI - Philippines end Lithuania tour with disappointing loss

KLAIPEDA, Lithuania (27th FIBA Asia Championship): Philippines wound up their tour of Lithuania, in preparation for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to be played in Manila from Aug 1-11 with a 5-2 record after losing to 79-86 Birstono Jazz Diremta on Saturday, a team they had beaten earlier.

Gary David led the visitors’ scoring with 25 points, while Marcus Douthit and LA Tenorio added 13 points each as the Philippines went into the game without Marc Pingris, Jayson Castro and Gabe Norwood.

“We didn’t play Jace (Jayson Castro) and Gabe but still no excuse for losing tonight,” said Philippines coach Chot Reyes.

Pingris sat out with a strained shoulder and Castro with a swollen ankle, while Norwood left the camp earlier in the day to get to back home to get married to his long-time girl friend Lei Feranil.

The game was a part of the three-game back-to-back outings Reyes planned for the team keeping in mind the playing schedule at the 27th FIBA Asia Championship.

Philippines had beaten the Lithuanian U20 team 88-84 on Thursday and avenged their earlier defeat to LSU-Baltai beating the Lithuanian club 90-88 on Friday before heading to the Saturday’s game.

Douthit was the leader of Philippines’ win against LSU-Baltai to whom Philippines had lost 86-89 earlier in their tour. Douthit scored 22 points.

Philippines are scheduled to return home on Monday for a break before leaving for Las Vegas for some scrimmages against American college teams.

At the 27th FIBA Asia Championship, Philippines have chosen to play in Group A also comprising Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Chinese Taipei in the Prelim Round competition.
