NASA on alert as giant asteroid with erratic orbit set to pass very close to Earth

~A potentially hazardous huge asteroid expected to pass very close to Earth on Halloween

~The space rock is as big as the Empire State Building

~It was spotted by NASA just less than two weeks ago, which is a very short notice for the space agency

~National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) spotted a big asteroid heading towards Earth less than two weeks ago. It will fly past our planet on October 31 at the speed of 35 kilometers per second or 78,000 miles per hour.
 
NASA said asteroid 2015 TB145’s estimated size is between 290 meters to 650 meters in diameter. It is many times bigger than the size of the Chelyabinsk meteor that entered earth’s atmosphere over Russia in February 2013 or will be as big as the Empire State Building. It was discovered only on October 10 by astronomers using the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System or Pan-STARRS telescope.
 
The space rock is described as hazardous as it will come closest to Earth at 310,000 miles or about 1.3 times the Earth-Moon distance; a tiny distance in astronomical terms.

It will come closer to the moon than to Earth, NASA said.

The space agency said the asteroid’s orbit is erratic so it can’t tell where it will exactly go. The space agency, however, is confident that it will not hit our planet.

“The asteroid is on an extremely eccentric and a high inclination orbit. This is the closest approach by a known object this large until 1999 AN10 approaches within 1 lunar distance in August 2027,” NASA explained.

Although it will not be visible to the naked eye, the asteroid can be observed with the use of telescopes.

“The flyby presents a truly outstanding scientific opportunity to study the physical properties of this object,” wrote NASA.
