The National University Pep Squad successfully defended its title in the UAAP Cheerdance Competition Sunday at SMART-Araneta Coliseum.
It was the second straight cheerdrance crown for NU after winning for the first time last year.
With its Native American-inspired performance, the defending champion executed a flawless routine, executing its stunts and tosses with ease despite their degrees of difficulty.
It was a long road for NU, now a budding cheerdance powerhouse, to its second straight crown. Boasting an intensive recruitment program and lineup of international trainers, the school first bagged third place in 2012 before eventually winning the back-to-back title.
But before hoisting the crown, NU needed to overcome an equally impressive showing of the cheerdance powerhouse University of the Philippines Pep Squad, which also looked determined to reclaim the title.
True to its theme “Equality,” the UP Pep squad stunned the competition by breaking tradition with women carrying and lifting their men counterparts in various stunts and pyramids.
To cap its flawless performance, members of the UP Pep Squad mimicked the iconic Oblation statue by forming the figure on the floor, much to the delight of the mammoth crowd.
NU had a total of 677.5 points, while UP scored 658 points.
The University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe, with an oriental-inspired theme, also made its return to the podium after finishing third place with 625 points.
The Far Eastern University Cheering Squad bagged the Group Stunts division followed by UST and NU.
