As far as i know parang they're monitoring Mark's injury on a day to day basis.. so depende na lang yun sa recovery nya kung mabilis or hindi.. pero kahit wala sa caguiao, sana may mag step up para sa kakulangan nya... tenorio have done his part nung last game nila... sana yung mga rookie naman ang magpakita....
Title: Re: Barangay Ginebra
Post by: hemorrhage on March 29, 2013, 11:17:07 PM
Hope so but iba pa rin pag si Caguiao stable very consistent. Pag asa sa step up baka matulad ng last time na injure si Caguiao.

Yup wala namang problem sa elimination. The one I'm worried is if matagal ang injury ni Spark and umabot ng playoffs period. Na miss ko na ang feeling that my favorite team is fighting for the championship or better yet winning the title.

Sana magretire na si JJ Heltherbrand. Para kumuha ng new PG ang Ginkings, though malaki contribution ni Labagala off the bench. Pero can you imagine guys kung walang injured sa Ginebra. Imagine mga shooters ng GinKings : Ababou, Baracael, Caguioa, Tenorio, Labagala, Heltherbrand. Mas may option pag nandun na si Ababou. Sana mag improve pa shooting ni Ellis. Yun na lang kulang sa kanya. Slasher-Defender na sya ngayon e.

Ito mainit - init na balita..

BARANGAY Ginebra on Wednesday bolstered
its backcourt in time for the PBA
Commissioner's Cup playoffs by acquiring
Josh Urbiztondo in a trade with Barako Bull.
Team insiders said the deal, which the two
teams has agreed on in principle just a day
before the trade deadline, will see Barako Bull
get rookie Keith Jensen and a future second-
round draft pick in return.
The trade papers are expected to reach the
Commissioner's Office for approval on
Wednesday night, the source added.
Once the deal is approved, Urbiztondo is
expected to shore up the backcourt of a
Ginebra team that is still awaiting the return of
injured star guard Mark Caguioa in the
playoffs.
Urbiztondo has already been informed about
the trade and is expected to report to Ginebra
practice on Thursday, according to player
agent Danny Espiritu.

Helterbrand's vintage night sparks Ginebra comeback
By Alder Almo (philstar.com) | Updated April 21, 2013 - 12:45am

MANILA, Philippines – The legion of die-hard fans were wishing Mark Caguioa could get on the floor when their team Ginebra San Miguel stared at a huge 15-point deficit early in the second half against Rain or Shine last night.

Caguioa could only watch from the bench and cheer on his teammates to continue fighting back.

The Mall of Asia Arena fell to eerie silence as the fans of the most popular PBA ballclub were starting to lose hope because the second seed Elasto Painters appeared headed on their way to the semifinals for the third straight conference.

But not so fast.

After all, Ginebra isn’t called never-say-die team for nothing.

With their conference on the line, a forgotten man, the better half of Caguioa in “The Fast and The Furious” chose the moment to step up for his injured partner.
Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

Jayjay Helterbrand earlier misfired a couple of shots in the first half but at crunchtime, he was clutch.

The 36-year old guard found a way to turn back the hands of time. Suddenly, it was 2008-09 all over again. Mr. Fast, the MVP version, came in and knocked in 13 all in the fourth as the Kings essayed another classic comeback, pulling off a 90-83 victory to live to fight another day.

“Glory be to God,” were the first words that came out of Helterbrand’s mouth after the game.  “We pulled off a miraculous victory because of Him.”

Helterbrand, a devout Christian, was a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc in this vintage night. His biggest triple of the game stretched Ginebra’s lead to seven, 86-79, to kill any Rain or Shine momentum to steal the game back with just a minute to go.

“Coach [Al Chua] told us in the locker room that if we want to have a practice tomorrow, we got to come out there and play like there’s no tomorrow,” Helterbrand added. “And that’s exactly what happened. Thank God, our whole team was able to step up and play.”

It wasn’t only Helterbrand as there was also Kerby Raymundo, who muscled his way to 14 points that kept the Kings within striking distance in the third period to set up the stage for Mr. Fast’s heroics.

There was also LA Tenorio, who banged in 19 shifting to shooting guard in lieu of Caguioa leaving his point guard duties to new recruit Josh Urbiztondo.

And the newest King also had his own moments of brilliance as Urbiztondo ran the show with boundless energy in his debut with the squad finishing with five assists on top of five boards despite scoring only four points and missing all his six attempts from the three-point land. Their import Vernon Macklin also starred in this game bouncing back from his lackluster play the last time out, this time pacing the team with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field mostly from ferocious dunks and his patented semi-hook shots.

But clearly, the night belonged to Helterbrand.

The 36-year old guard, who is the only other MVP in the squad aside from Caguioa, bought some time for his ailing partner to join him and the Kings as they try to write a Cinderella story this conference.

Never Say Die: Ginebra overcomes Rain or Shine to advance to semifinals
InterAKTV · Monday, April 22, 2013 · 8:56 pm
Vernon Macklin scored the last four points of the game, including the marginal free throws to lead Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to an 81-79 victory over the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters Monday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings import scored on a tip-in to tie the game with under a minute left, before making two pressure-packed free throws with 11 seconds in the game to help Ginebra complete a quarterfinals upset over the second-seed Elasto Painters.

Rain or Shine had several opportunities to at least tie the game. But Macklin blocked Jeff Chan’s layup attempt with six seconds left.

The Elasto Painters drew up a play that freed up Paul Lee for a corner three-pointer that missed. Rain or Shine got a couple of offensive rebounds, but point-blank attempts by Chan and Gabe Norwood failed to hit the mark, leaving the mammoth crowd of 12,764 fans at the Big Dome in ecstasy as the final buzzer sounded.

Macklin finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists for Ginebra, which moves to the best-of-five semifinals against the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters.

Chris Tiu and Lee led Rain or Shine with 15 and 14 points apiece, while import Bruno Sundov battled foul trouble to finish with a quiet 12 points.

In biggest test of career, Vernon Macklin steps up from free throw line for Ginebra
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Monday, April 22, 2013 · 9:28 pm

It was the biggest test in the young professional basketball career of Vernon Macklin.

With a reputation as a poor free throw shooter, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel import sank two pressure-packed free throws with 11 seconds left in the game to lead Ginebra to a thrilling 81-79 victory over Rain or Shine Monday night.

After the game, Macklin said it was one of the biggest games he has ever played.

The former Detroit Piston gave credit to Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua for sticking with him in the clutch despite his poor free throw percentage.

“Coach told me that I will win or lose you, so he stuck with me,” Macklin told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. “There was a time I was shooting really bad from the free throw line, but he trusted me and didn’t pull me out.”

Chua said that he was willing to live and die with Macklin’s performance from the stripe.

“I know Macklin can make it. (I told him,) ‘I will stick with you, if you miss your free throws, you miss your free throws. But I’m not gonna take you out,’” said Chua, who noted that wasn’t always the case at Ginebra.

“Dati nung si Siot [Tanquingcen] pa coach, he would take out [former import Jackson] Vroman, who is always being fouled.”

Macklin was also instrumental in Ginebra’s final defensive outings, swatting away a potential game-tying layup by Jeff Chan. He finished with 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists, dominating his matchup with counterpart Bruno Sundov.

Despite his gaudy numbers, he deflected praise to the rest of the Gin Kings.

“I have to give it to my teammates who played hard every game. Now, we’re here in the semis,” said Macklin.

Ginebra coach Alfrancis Chua on beating Rain or Shine: ‘They underestimated us’
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Monday, April 22, 2013 · 9:13 pm

“They underestimated us.”

That was how Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Alfrancis Chua explained how his underdog team defeated Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals of the Commissioner’s Cup.

The seventh-seed Gin Kings booked their ticket to the semifinals with two straight victories over the second-ranked Elasto Painters, who were coming off back-to-back stints in the finals of the two previous tournaments. The Gin Kings did it despite missing superstar Mark Caguioa, while top point guard LA Tenorio struggled in Monday’s second win scoring just two points.

Still, other players stepped up.

“They underestimated our players, pilay-pilay kami, hindi nila na-anticipate ang puso ng mga bata,” said Chua.

The quarterfinals victory continued Ginebra’s storybook conference that has seen the Gin Kings rebound from a 0-4 start to crash the final four.

Up next for Ginebra in the semifinals is Talk ‘N Text, another powerhouse team. But Chua believes that Ginebra can pull off yet another upset.

“Morale ng mga bata at yung puso, hindi maalis yun,” he said.

TALK ‘N TEXT TIES SERIES AT 1-1
9:13 pm | Sunday, April 28th, 2013

Fast fading away from the series, the Talk n Text Tropang Texters dug deep from within them and avoided plunging in a hole that is as good as death.

The Texters battled back from nine points down at the start of the fourth quarter and forced a 1-1 deadlock with the Barangay Ginebra Kings in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup best-of-five semifinals with a crucial 85-79 victory at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

Ranidel de Ocampo overcame foul-trouble situation, pouring in 10 points in the fourth quarter including a three-pointer that broke Ginebra’s back and the hearts of predominant of the crowd of over 17,000 in the playing venue.

It was a gutsy, crucial three-pointer De Ocampo made, being 0-of-6 from beyond the arc from Game One to the closing stretch of Game Two.

“I have to take it. At yon, pumasok,” said De Ocampo of the shot deciding the outcome of the well-fought match.

“It’s a virtual do-or-die game for us because 0-2 is a difficult situation. Going to the fourth with a nine-point deficit, we said this is it. We have to survive and tie the series or we’re in big trouble. And we showed urgency,” said Talk n Text coach Norman Black.

Even with a game apiece, the Texters and the Kings break the tie at the resumption of the series after the PBA All-Star Week in Digos, Davao del Sur from May 1-6.

Both teams are likely to be healthier then. Out of the series and probably the early part of next conference, however, is Talk n Text guard/forward Jarred Dillinger who suffered an injury as he got involved in a car accident early Saturday morning.

“Some were saying we have a deep lineup. It’s time to show it,” said Black.

In this particular game, the Texters willed themselves to victory, preventing the Kings from moving to within a game of a first finals in two years.

And alive is Talk n Text’s hopes for successive crowns following its Philippine Cup conquest.

“I’m really happy we decided to play defense tonight. That’s gonna be key in the series,” said Black. “Unlike the last game, we played defense with more focus and more intensity. That’s what will take us to make the finals.”

Jerome Jordan made just 14 points but provided help with his huge presence in the middle.

Offensively, Jayson Castro, Jimmy Alapag and De Ocampo showed the way, each one firing at least 16 points each.

De Ocampo stood out as he rattled in 10 points in the last quarter playing through five fouls.

Ginebra was still within striking distance when the 6-foot-6 forward drained a gutsy triple making it 83-79 with 33.7 ticks left.

Curiously, Talk n Text was 4-of-25 from the three-point land in the series before De Ocampo buried the trey. In Game One, the Texters misfired 17 of 18 attempts.

Jayjay Helterbrand knocked in a gliding jumper at the buzzer to close Ginebra’s crucial third-quarter onslaught giving the Kings the 68-59 advantage.

Down by three, 44-47, at the turn, the Kings seized command in the third period on a key run fueled by hustle and gutsy plays by Vernon Macklin, LA Tenorio, Kerby Raymundo and Josh Urbiztondo.

Raymundo inflicted Talk n Text a blow in drawing De Ocampo’s fourth foul a little over a minute into the third.

Returning in the fourth after a 10-minute rest, De Ocampo helped the Texters back into the game.

Alapag drilled in 11 points plus a twinner while Castro added 10 markers as the Texters led by three at the half.

The Texters opened with a 12-2 run but the Kings slowly got into the game, surging ahead at 28-27 on back-to-back treys by Helterbrand and Urbiztondo at the onset of the second period. (SB)

The scores:

TALK N’ TEXT 85 – Castro 22, Alapag 17, De Ocampo 16, Jordan 14, Carey 6, Al-Hussaini 5, Reyes 4, Aban 1, Raymundo 0, Fonacier 0, Ferriols 0.

BARANGAY GINEBRA 79 – Raymundo 17, Macklin 15, Urbiztondo 15, Helterbrand 12, Tenorio 8, Ellis 6, Taha 2, Baracael 2, Maierhofer 2.

Quarterscores: 22-20, 47-44, 59-68, 85-79

Gaya ni ABUEVA, ang masarap
kakampi - CAGUIOA!
MANILA, Philippines – Alaska
rookie
Calvin Abueva’s intensity and
passion for the game earned him
Brgy. Ginebra San Miguel
superstar
Mark Caguioa’s "fistbump" of
approval.
Caguioa, who stormed to the
league
in 2001 with a “devil-may-care”
swagger, sees a lot of himself in
his
younger years in the Aces’ rookie
sensation.
“Nakikita ko ang sarili ko nung
nagsisimula pa lang ako sa PBA
kay
Calvin [Abueva],” Caguioa told
Philstar.com after their team
practice last Wednesday.
“Walang
pakialam [sa sasabihin ng mga
tao].
Laro lang ng laro.”
Abueva recently drew the ire of
San
Mig Coffee superstar James Yap
for
his rugged defense in their
semifinal
series that is currently tied at
one
game apiece. But Abueva, who
possesses the same “no fear” swag
like Caguioa, is unfazed of the
challenge to shut down Yap, a
two-
time league MVP.
Caguioa, though, distanced
himself
from the “word war” between
Abueva and Yap in the aftermath
of
their heated Game 2 where the
San
Mig Coffee superstar accused the
Alaska rookie of too much
flopping
and playing dirty including
hitting
him on his injured back. But
Caguioa, the reigning league
MVP,
likes the idea of having Abueva
as a
teammate.
“Ang mga gaya ni Calvin ang
masarap na kakampi.
Nagpapakamatay para manalo,”
Caguioa said.

Tapos parang di nila namatch ang Alaska man for man with Coach Chua opted for a three guard line-up and minsan pa nga, 3 point guard line-up which is too small and really exploited by Alaska with Abueva as their 3. With 3 small guards, talagang hirap kontrolin ang inside game at rebounds with only Macklin doing much of these. Baracael and Hatfield were too small to match up against Thoss or Espinas. Ini-exploit ito ng mga kalabang team to use a taller frontline to dominate the battle of the boards at para sa small forward position eh may nakikitang mismatch especially pag nasa depensa ang Ginebra.

Good point sir. Actually,I'm not a fan of Ginebra, pero I like LA Tenorio. I like his point guard skills since HS days sa beda. Mark Cagioua needs the ball,so is LA.
I believe they got lucky sa injuries kaya nakalusot sa TNT. And yes, urbiztondo is a high risk, low reward player.
Im not an analyst, but for ginebra to be effective, they need Mark off the ball. And to be a REAL championship caliber team, they need a bigman. Jay Washington perhaps?
Pero maganda yung nangyari sa Ginebra, maganda yung storya nila this conference. But still a mismatch sa Finals. Kudos sa Ginebra for fighting hard.

Ginebra eyes improved Line-up . . .

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is looking to improve its lineup - particularly its frontline unit - for the next conference, and the Kings'
are hoping to add a solid post
player, something the team lacked in the previous Commissioner's Cup when it lost in the finals.

Robert Non, the league's chairman who represents the team to the PBA Board of Governors, said yesterday that they are looking to
that direction and they are hoping something will materialize this nearly three-month break of the PBA.

"Hopefully we can add a bigman, we don't have that," said Non.

"The bigman we have now are Billy Mamaril, who is coming off a wrist injury, and Yousef Taha, a newcomer. (Import) Vernon Macklin was the center for Ginebra in the Commissioner's Cup, and he
will not be around next conference," Non added.

The official of Ginebra did not
mention who they are targeting, although recently the team tried to reach a deal to obtain high-leaper Japeth Aguilar from Globalport, which nearly happened at the trade deadline going to the playoffs.

The proposed deal at that time was a package of Aguilar and Willie Miller - who previously had a stint with the popular ball club - going
to Ginebra while Globalport will get Elmer Espiritu, Rob Labagala and the 6-foot-8 Taha.

League insiders said that the Kings are still hot in getting the 6-foot-9 Aguilar, who was shipped to Globalport from Talk 'N Text for 6- foot-7 center Rabah Al-Hussaini.
Aguilar's father - Peter - once
suited up for Ginebra.

The lack of a legitimate center was exposed during the Finals of the Commissioner's Cup, where the Kings were swept by the Alaska Aces in their best-of-five finals series. Barangay Ginebra had no
answer to the "Twin Towers" of 6- foot-7 Sonny Thoss and 6-foot-8 import Robert Dozier.

Dozier bagged the Bobby Parks Best Import award while Thoss was named the PBA Press Corps Finals MVP.

Despite the setback, Non said he still commends the players and the coaching staff led by mentor Alfrancis Chua, who he gave a passing grade for guiding the team back to the Finals in his very first conference as Ginebra head coach.

Ginebra, according to Chua, will take a much-needed rest for the next three weeks and the Kings will resume practice session in mid- July. The last conference - Governors' Cup - is scheduled August 14 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Kings are eyeing former
University of San Francisco
stalwart and Saigon Heat player in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) Dior Lowhorn as their import next conference, where the teams are allowed to have reinforcements not
taller that 6-foot-5 . . .

PBA news :

PBA approves trade Dillinger-Allado to meralco; Buenafe to barako bull; Anthony to talk and text.

Jared Dillinger will bring his versatility to the Meralco Bolts.Sean Anthony will provide additional frontline hustle for Talk ‘N Text. Ronjay Buenafe will try to make his mark in veteran-laden Barako Bull.

These three players were part of a deal that was consummated Monday and approved by the PBA.

Also involved in the package, according to Santos are veteran player Don Allado, who moves from Barako Bull to Meralco, and second-year forward Gilbert Bulawan, who was acquired by the Energy Colas from the Bolts.

“It’s a three-way trade. The first trade was Jared Dillinger for Sean Anthony. Then,Dillinger and Don Allado for Buenafe and Gilbert Bulawan,” explained PBA operations
manager Ricky Santos, who is
currently the officer in charge in the absence of commissioner Chito Salud.

Dillinger, who is currently recovering after being involved in a car accident, is expected to bring size and versatility to Meralco’s wing positions. Allado, meanwhile, will reunite with Bolts coach Ryan Gregorio, who coached the veteran center at Purefoods.

Buenafe provides additional
backcourt firepower for Barako Bull, which traded away top playmaker Josh Urbiztondo last conference.

Anthony give Talk ‘N Text a hustle player who plays both forward positions, beefing up the Tropang Texters’ front court. . .

eto pa isa . . .

JAPETH Aguilar's long-awaited move to Barangay Ginebra is pushing through afterall.
Multiple sources told Spin.ph on Monday that sister teams Ginebra and Petron and league newcomer Globaport are putting the final touches on a deal revolving around
the high-leaping Aguilar.

The final draft of the trade has yet to be approved by all the parties, but the main deal that would have Aguilar moving to Ginebra for rookie center Yousif Taha and a future first-round draft pick has already been sealed, sources said.

Globalport, the sources added, is also involved in another swap with Petron that would have the Batang Pier acquiring Jay Washington for
rookie gunner Jason Deutschmann.

To complete the shake-up of
Ginebra's lineup, the league's most popular team is also sending high- flyer Elmer Espiritu to Barako Bull
for a future draft pick.

Sources said the multi-layered deal could be approved as early as Tuesday pending the final talks between the two SMC clubs and Globalport team owner Mikee Romero.

The deals come on the heels of
another three-team trade that
started with Talk 'N Text sending injured guard Jared Dillinger to Barako Bull for Sean Anthony.

Dillinger, in turn, was packaged by
Barako Bull with Don Allado and sent to Meralco for Ronjay Buenafe and rarely used Gilbert Bulawan.

The deals were approved by the PBA Commissioner's Office on Monday. . .

Asi-Japeth tandem, a nightmare for Ginebra foes
If Ginebra could acquire Asi Taulava to partner with Japeth Aguilar, they will have a dangerous tandem that could create huge problems to opposing PBA teams.

Both Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao and Air21 mentor Franz Pumaren agreed that Alfrancis Chua will be one lucky coach if Ginebra succeeds in adding Taulava to its lineup that already includes Aguilar.

In an interview with Spin.ph’s Snow Badua, Guiao said the presence of Tualava and Aguilar will suddenly spike the Gin Kings’ ceiling.

“Yung Asi (Taulava) and Japeth (Aguilar) puwede mo kasing palaruin ng sabay `yun. Imagine mo `yun, tapos may import pa sila. So size-wise, walang tatalo sa kanila pag nagkaganoon,” says Yeng Guiao.

“Yun lang may Japeth Aguilar ka na, malaking bagay na yun. Kung makukuha pa nila si Asi, mas malaking bagay `yun,” he added.

Both players stand 6-foot-9 and possess the agility to create offensive and defensive nightmare against players that will attempt to get in their path.

For his part, Pumaren said Chua said will have a “pleasant problem” in his hands if he gets to dispatch both players.

He said some of Ginebra’s big men, like Kerby Raymundo and Billy Mamaril, will be inevitably displaced. But at the same time, this will force the other players to prove themselves worthy of their wanted playing minutes.

“It will be a happy problem for coach Al. Ang isa pang maganda run, ma-tsa-challenge `yung ibang big men to step up,” sais Pumaren. “Remember Ginebra also has Rico Maierhofer, Rudy Hatfield, and Willie Wilson. Souped-up team na talaga ang Kings if that happens.”

Ginebra has recently acquired Aguilar from GlobalPort in a trade that involved five players and several draft picks.

The San Miguel franchise now also has the option to get Taulava as his former team, Meralco has opened itself to offers in exchange for the Fil-Tongan’s PBA rights.

Taulava, who steered the San Miguel Beermen to an ABL championship, recently voiced out that he want to suit up for the crowd-favorite Gin Kings.

THE major reorganization of the coaching staff of the three ballclubs under the giant San Miguel Corp.umbrella is set to lure one coach from a rival team.

His name? Alaska assistant coach Louie Alas.

Alas, who sat opposite the Barangay Ginebra bench during the last PBA Commissioner's Cup won by Alaska, has been offered a coaching post by the SMC organization, most likely with Ginebra.

The multi-titled Alas admitted to Spin.ph that he was offered a coaching job during a meeting with SMC basketball officials Robert Non and Noli Eala on Monday afternoon at
the SMC headquarters in Ortigas.

“Yes, kinausap nila ako.Inaalok nga ako,” said Alas, who was accompanied by agent Danny Espiritu during the meeting.

San Miguel officials did not specify which particular post they are offering Alas, who will be furnished a copy of the contract offer before he leaves for the US to join the rest of the Alaska Aces in their US trip.

The US trip is a bonus for the Aces' sweep of Ginebra in the last Commissioner's Cup Finals, where Alas stood as one of the top deputies of young Alaska coach Luigi Trillo.
“Isa kasi sa mga binanggit sa kanya is yung chance -bigger chance- to coach sa ilang teams ng San Miguel.
Iba yung plano sa kanya. Pag aaralan pa,” he added.

The well-known player agent believes Alas is bound for a spot as an assistant coach at Ginebra, which has vacancies in its coaching staff following the transfer of Allan Caidic
and Juno Sauler to La Salle.

Sauler was recently named new La Salle head coach, replacing Gee Abanilla while Caidic is set to be assigned full time to the Green Archers as shooting coach and assistant coach.

Spin.ph had earlier reported that University of the East Red Warriors coach Boysie Zamar has also been offered a spot in the Gin Kings' staff as one of Alfrancis Chua’s deputies. Espiritu said the ball is now in Alas’ hands.
“He was offered something that is hard to resist. Kaya ngayon kailangan niyang i-discuss yun with Alaska 'pag nasa US na sila. Kaya yun ang time na ipapadala sa kanya yung copy ng offer,” Espiritu said.
Alas declined comment when asked what he feels about the offer . . .

Rigodon of Coaches at SMC corp . . .

NEW ASSISTANT COACHES FOR GINEBRA: ATO AGUSTIN AND GEORGE GALLENT.. read on for the full story...

THE worst-kept secret in town is out.The much-anticipated rigodon of coaches of San Miguel Corp.-owned teams is underway, with Gee Abanilla
taking over from Olsen Racela as coach of Petron where he will be joined by a whole new team of assistant coaches and team manager. Abanilla, who was replaced as La Salle coach last month, will have newly minted ABL champion coach
Leo Austria of San Miguel and Koy Banal, formerly of San Mig Coffee, as assistants. The only holdover from Racela's staff will be former pro Biboy
Ravanes.

Named Petron team manager is Siot Tanquingcen, who won championships as a coach of Ginebra and was also a former coach of the flagship franchise of the SMC group.
PBA great Hector Calma, who
previously held the position, has been named the franchise's alternate board member - the same post to be
held by current Ginebra manager Samboy Lim.

League chairman Robert Non is now Ginebra's team manager and representative to the board.
To complete the cast, former
Indonesia Warriors coach Todd Purves is set to return to the country in two weeks time to take on a consultant role at Petron. He was in the country
for four days last week and sources said he has already agree in terms with the SMC group.

Racela, who coached Petron for two conferences, has been moved to San Mig as one of Tim Cone's assistants.
Ginebra will also have two new faces in its coaching staff in former Petron champion coach Ato Agustin and George Gallent, formerly of San Mig.Gallent played for Ginebra head coach Al Chua during his days in the amateur leagues.

Spin.ph had earlier reported that University of the East coach Boycie Zamar and Alaska assistant coach Louie Alas have been offered assistant coaching positions at
Barangay Ginebra. Aside from Tanquingcen, Ginebra has
also lost Juno Sauler and Allan Caidic who are now working full time at La Salle as coach and assistant, respectively.

Tenorio tallies career-high 34 to lead Ginebra past Meralco
By RENEE FOPALAN,GMA NewsAugust 24, 2013 6:57pm

LA Tenorio scored 34 big points to lead Barangay Ginebra San Miguel to a 98-85 win  against the Meralco Bolts, their first triumph in the 2013 Governors' Cup, on Saturday at the Cuneta Astrodome.

"Maganda yung umpisa namin, tapos medyo nawala yung focus dahil sa mga calls," said Ginebra coach Ato Agustin. "I told them to focus; don't mind the refs then play our game. Gumanda yung opensa namin especially si LA."

The Gilas Pilipinas point guard was perfect from deep (5-of-5). He also had seven rebounds and seven assists, versus just two turnovers.

Ginebra raced to a 10-5 lead, before import Mario West, Reynel Hugnatan and one-time Ginebra player John Wilson teamed up to pull Meralco within one, 14-13. A Cliff Hodge layup gave Meralco the lead, before Mark Caguioa and Dior Lowhorn put the Kings back on top, 20-15.

Four points from LA Tenorio made it a seven-point game, 24-17, then after West and Lowhorn exchanged baskets, Japeth Aguilar scored two more to end the first with Ginebra ahead, 31-19.

Josh Urbiztondo padded Ginebra's advantage early in the second, hitting a three and getting a split for a 14-point lead, 35-21. A 7-0 run by the Bolts was halted by a Chris Ellis jumper, before Hugnatan converted in the shaded lane, 37-30.

Mark Caguioa rung in a long bomb to make it a 10-point game anew, but Wilson countered with six points. A basket from Chris Timberlake cut the lead to two, 40-38, only for Tenorio to hit a three to give Ginebra some breathing room.

Just before the halftime buzzer, Meralco went on a rally started by a pair of Wilson free throws. After Hodge got two more from the line, West got a deuce in the paint to grab the lead after two, 44-43.

Tenorio and Lowhorn seized the lead for Ginebra at the start of the third, 51-48. Japeth Aguilar joined the scoring party soon after, stringing seven of his own for a 60-52 count. Caguioa and Lowhorn bumped the lead up to 14 late in the third, before West responded with back-to-back hits, 69-59.

A Tenorio three established a 13-point lead, but Sunday Salvacion replied with his own trey. The Barangay ended up holding on to a seven-point advantage heading into the payoff period, 76-69.

Caguioa and Lowhorn seemed determined to end the game strong for Ginebra, as they canceled out Meralco makes with their own, 81-71.

After an Aguilar putback, Helterbrand nailed a trey to establish a 15-point lead.  Hodge ate into his side's deficit, getting it down to 10 with a little bit over two minutes remaining, but a Lowhorn block led to a Caguioa breakaway layup, 95-83.

The Bolts then came up empty in the final two minutes to give Ginebra the victory.

Dior Lowhorn added 17 points on 17 field goal attempts, and also hauled in 15 boards and blocked two shots. Mark Caguioa chimed in with 15 markers, plus six dimes, while Japeth Aguilar tallied 13 points, seven boards and four blocks.

Meralco drew 21 points from their import Mario West, while John Wilson had some revenge on his former team, torching them for 17 points, though he was just 2-of-9 from three-point land. Rookie Cliff Hodge put together a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, as did Reynel Hugnatan, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Ginebra was better from long-range, 10-of-22, versus their foes' 6-of-28 clip. They also played more as a team, with a 23-15 edge in assists. - AMD, GMA News

eto yan oh !

News Update :
The three-team trade transaction involving the Air 21 Express and two San Miguel Corporation teams has already been "agreed upon in principle," sources said, with a few revisions.

Under the new terms of the deal, Air21 will get high-scoring off-guard Joseph Yeo from Petron for wingman Nelbert Omolon in a straight swap then acquire Kerby Raymundo from Barangay Ginebra in exchange for big man James Sena and the Express' first-round pick in 2014.

The transaction, slightly tweaked from the terms first broached over the weekend and reported by Spin.ph on Monday, may reach the Commissioner's Office for approval as early as Wednesday, sources said.“Pinabago - naghahanap kami ng mas bagay. Medyo parang kulang yung makukuha namin sa Air 21,” said a source from the San Miguel group which asked not. to be named.

One major stumbling block to the trade was cleared, sources said, when SMC big boss Ramon S. Ang, who is reportedly close to the Yeo family, approved the trade.“Pumayag na daw si Boss (Ramon S. Ang) na i-release si Joseph,” said the source.“Nilabas na yung agreement.Pinapipirmahan na.”

The deal will be the first of two major transactions that the Bert Lina franchise will make within the week as Air21 looks to address two areas where it is weakest - the off-guard position and its frontline.

The Meralco Bolts are also in negotiations with team governor Lito Alvarez for a one-on-one swap that will involve former Dela Salle Green Archers stars Mark Cardona and Mike Cortez.

Dami nila players walang playing time. Sink or swim with him. SMH  :-\

First game of the season against SMC. Greg Slaughter's more of a defensive anchor for the team when he dominated the boards with 13 rebounds and adding 2 blocks. He finished the game with a double-double performance with 10 points, 13 rebounds and 2 blocks. Japeth Aguilar is more confident in scoring now that he's playing at the 4 spot and effectively defended the weak side defense with a total of 5 blocks. Dylan Ababou is back as he lead the scoring run in the 4th quarter. Mark Caguioa struggled again. We've seen a better ball rotation when Emman Monfort and LA Tenorio played at the same time. We have yet to see James Forrester's impact on the team. Jay R Reyes fits in Ginebra's system. Good game for Ginebra.

Pero after 1st half nung na bench sya in favor of Ababou at Monfort, mas maganda laro nila.

Now 34, Mark Caguioa motivated by matchups with young gunners Paul Lee,Terrence Romeo

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel superstar Mark Caguioa had a different hop in his step on Sunday night as he was matched up with Rain or Shine hotshot Paul Lee.

After the game, he admitted that matching up with a young gunner like Paul Lee gives him extra motivation, to show that while he has aged, he’s not ready to ride off into the sunset just yet.

The Gin Kings’ next assignment is GlobalPort, and Caguioa has already set his sights on another young gunner that will be looking to take him down —
Batang Pier rookie Terrence Romeo

“Now you have a guy named Romeo. He’s a very aggressive player and gusto niya ring magpakilala,” said Caguioa.

“Back then, kung ano yung sinasabi ng mga tao na buwakaw, siyempre it’s part of growing up. Siyempre scorer ka bago pumunta dito sa liga eh. You have to show, then later on makikita na niya ang mga papasahan niya.

info :

RoS' win over Barako earlier formalized Brgy. Ginebra's 20th straight conf playoff appearance, the longest active streak among the teams. Even if Ginebra loses its last 5 games in the elims it will still advance to QF. But of course Kings are aiming for twice to beat adv in QF. Brgy. Ginebra's playoff streak is the longest by any team since San Miguel Beer's 24 from the 1996 Govs Cup up to the 2005 Fiesta Conf. Curiously that 2005 Fiesta Conf was the last time Barangay Ginebra failed to advance past the elimination round. . .

Gin Kings can live with Japeth, Greg at LA as their main cogs. Plus nandyan si Dylan, Chris, Mac to give support plus a solid bench.

BGK is a very young team and they have a great potential to grow - its like when Miami converge their Big 3 and a lot of people expect them to win the Championship easy, at once. Then Mavericks team with relevant experience beat them in the finals. But after that set back, Miami won 2 championships in a row -- how about that?

Now same thing applies to BGK. Clearly, talent-wise they have what it takes to win a championship, it just doesnt have the right game plan, the right mindset and the right mentality to do so.

In time, BGK will gel, and with good direction of the coaches, I see this team to be a relevant contender in the next 3-5 years.

Tapos na era ni Caguioa sa Ginebra, make the youngters (Slaughter, Ellis, Baracael, Abbabou & Agular) run the show for the barangay. Nandyan naman si Tenorio at Helterbrand to give pointers to them.

:bye: :bye: :bye:

I don't know about sa tamad si Powell sir rev, pero considering na kakarating lang nya sa Pinas nung April 1, tapos laro agad kahapon (april 2) kahit kulang pa sa practice yan with the team is a good deal for the team. I'm not sure kung galing USA or China, kung USA edi may jetlag pa yan.

napanood nyo ba boss yung game?

:bye:

Yup napanood ko, if not di ko rin ma mention yung match up nila ni Jackson na import ng Meralco. Nangangapa pa yan since first game nya ri.

Etong conference kamote talaga Ginebra. Hehe

Ginebra orphaned as import Josh Powell gets call-up from Houston Rockets in time for NBA playoffs

GINEBRA has found itself orphaned in the PBA Commissioner's Cup when import Josh Powell got an offer to join the Houston Rockets in time for the NBA playoffs.

Ginebra officials broke the news to the team after Powell played sparingly in a 73-83 loss to Alaska on Sunday night. Team governor Robert Non confirmed Powell's impending departure after the game.

“Sinabi niya nakatanggap siya ng call sa Houston (Rockets) kaninang umaga, early morning,” said a dejected Non.

The development came as a shock for the fans, who had pinned so much hope on Powell since he arrived to take the place of misfiring import Leon Rodgers.

The 6-8 Powell, a six-year NBA veteran who was part of two champion teams of the Los Angeles Lakers, went out on a low note as he went scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting in 15 minutes against the Aces.

He sat out the second half due to what TV reports said was a painful foot until news of his impending exit filtered out.

Non said they asked Powell if he could play in the second half and the former Laker suggested to play possibly for two minutes.

“Sabi niya I’ll try first two minutes in the second half. Eh huwag na lang siya maglaro kung ganun,” Non added.

With Powell suddenly out of the picture, the top Ginebra official said they are training their sight on either Andre Emmett, who once played for the Memphis Grizzlies, or Charles Thomas, a former standout of Arkansas.

Non said the team is leaning toward signing Emmett, listed at 6-5, so he could play for the Gin Kings all the way in the season-ending Governors Cup.

The third conference allows each team to tap a reinforcement no taller than 6-5.

PBA legend Robert Jaworski in talks with Ang for return to Ginebra, says source

PBA icon Robert Jaworski is in talks with San Miguel Corp. top honcho Ramon S. Ang on the possibility of returning to the Ginebra coaching job, a source told Spin.ph on Wednesday.

According to the team insider, Jaworski and Ang have been in constant touch for a while now and last met in March just before the longtime Ginebra playing-coach left for the US to watch the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Timonthy Bradley in Las Vegas.

Incidentally, the last meeting occurred at the height of the Commissioner's Cup struggle of a Ginebra team that has one of the most formidable lineups on paper but continues to fall short - its PBA championship drought now going six years and counting.

On Tuesday, the Gin Kings were ousted from the title chase at the first stage of the playoffs after a lopsided 84-97 loss to top seed Talk 'N Text, heightening the call for changes in the league's most popular ballclub.

“How will I answer it (your question about Jaworski)? Confidential pa kasi 'yung lahat. But there is an ongoing negotiation,” said the source. “Wala pang definite, but there are negotiations.”

The same source bared that the line of communication between Jaworski and Ang has always been open.

“Hindi mo naman pwedeng sabihin na walang pag-uusap yung dalawa, kasi ang dalas ngang mag guest ni Jawo sa mga events ng Ginebra. Nanood nga siya sa semis game ng team last conference, di ba?” he stressed.

“Sa ngayon talaga, wala pang concrete. Pero may exploratory negotiations na.”

In the last interview he granted to Spin.ph last March 7, Jaworski, 68, neither confirmed nor denied reports that he is in talks for a return to a team he helped turn into the most popular in the pro league with its 'never-say-die' spirit and aggressive, rugged style of play.

But the former senator made it clear he is open to a return to basketball, on the condition that he be given "full control" of the team.

Even longtime Ginebra star Mark Caguioa harked back to the team's glory years under Jaworski when he blasted his teammates for being 'soft and lazy' in a Twitter rant, hours after the loss to Talk 'N Text.

Rino Salazar, Jaworski's longtime deputy, has also joined the calls for the one-time PBA MVP's return to the team, telling Spin.ph that it's high time the PBA icon takes over the ballclub again.

On Wednesday, Spin.ph contacted Jaworski’s longtime sports affairs PR man and business manager Reli de Leon, but the outspoken sportsman refused to comment on the matter.

De Leon, however, said Jaworski felt bad that the team continues to lose.

“He feels sorry that his team is losing. Mas masaya daw ang Pilipinas pag kasama sa championship ang Ginebra, being the most popular PBA team, mas madaming maligaya, mas masaya ang PBA fans,” De Leon said.

Asked how Jaworski missed coaching the team he represented from 1983 to 1998, De Leon, who was with the Big J during the Las Vegas trip for the Pacquiao fight, gave a fascinating response.

“Bobby just wants to bring back something for the fans. It’s not for the money. He doesn’t want the never-say-die spirit to die this way. He wants to revive the animo of Ginebra,” he said.

Massive revamp of Ginebra coaching staff as Olsen Racela set to join incoming coach Jeff Cariaso
(http://contents.spin.ph/image/abarrientos-cariaso-racela-42814.jpg)

Sources say Jeff Cariaso, middle, tried to bring both Johnny Abarrientos and Olsen Racela to Ginebra, but only the latter got the nod from San Mig management.

A MASSIVE revamp of the Barangay Ginebra coaching staff is set to unfold over the next few days.

According to sources, the imminent arrival of new coach Jeffrey Cariaso will set off a shake-up of the Ginebra coaching staff beginning with the arrival of Olsen Racela, who is set to join his fellow San Mig assistant on the bench of the PBA's most popular team.

Racela, who briefly coached Petron/San Miguel before moving to serve as a deputy of Tim Cone at San Mig, has been given the green light to assist Cariaso when Ginebra makes the transition from a run-and-gun system to a triangle offense, the source added.

The changes should be in place when Ginebra returns to practice for the season-ending Governors Cup on Monday, just over a week after a disappointing quarterfinal exit from the Commissioner's Cup.

A source said Cariaso, a former Rookie of the Year and many-time All-Star, tried to bring along both Racela and Johnny Abarrientos from San Mig to Ginebra, but only the former got the nod.

“Mukhang approve na yung paglipat ni Olsen. Inaayos na lang. Dapat si Johnny A din kasama, kaso hindi na pumayag si Tim (Cone),” said the source.

In turn, Cone, a source said, is trying to lure Joel Banal to fill the gap to be left by Cariaso and Racela.

“Gusto kasi ni Jeff mga kakilala niya ang makakasama. Hindi naman sa ayaw niya yung mga andun ngayon, pero syempre, kailangan niyo yung makakatulong sa kanya,” said the source.

There is still no official word on the movement of the current members of the Ginebra coaching staff, but a source bared that at this point it is only Jorge Gallent who is certain of staying on.

Another information bared that former Barako Bull coach Bong Ramos is also on the radar of Ginebra.

Meanwhile, current head Ginebra head coach Ato Agustin is likely to return to San Miguel Beer, the same team he led to the championship of the 2011 Governors’ Cup which is set to kick off on May 24 at the latest, assuming the best-of-seven Commissioner’s Cup finals goes the distance.

Art Dela Cruz will most likely move to Barako Bull to join former Ginebra coach Siot Tanquincen, who will assume the role of head coach of the Energy starting next conference.

On the other hand, current team manager Alfrancis Chua is set to be moved up to team governor in place of Robert Non, who will take over San Miguel's place in the board vacated by the late Ely Capacio.

The fate of Juno Sauler, Allan Caidic and Freddie Abuda remains in the balance, but sources say the three are at the moment focusing on the Dela Salle Green Archers, who are backed by San Miguel Corp. big boss Danding Cojuangco.

“Sa Lunes pa talaga yan ma-a-announce. Yung finality niyan sa Lunes na ilalabas,” said the source.

After 1 conference at di maganda pinakita, palit ang coaching staff. Di tuloy mabuo team chemistry (at may bwaya pang superstar na maangas, #47).

Ang mga winning teams, nag-umpisa sa mababa, pinatibay muna team chemistry at unti-unti nagdadagdag ng player to complete the puzzle ika nga.

Ang SMC team, walang tiyagang mag-antay, gusto instant championship agad. At yon ang nakaka-bwisit. >:(

Jeffrey “The Jet” Cariaso has officially been named as the new head coach of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, Slam Philippines reported, Tuesday, in advance of an exclusive interview with the 15-year PBA alum.

Cariaso would take over from Ato Agustin. It was not immediately clear who would make up Cariaso’s staff.

Cariaso would take over from Ato Agustin. It was not immediately clear who would make up Cariaso’s staff.

Currently an assistant coach with the San Mig Coffee Mixers, who are in the semifinals of the 2014 Commissioner’s Cup, it is still unsure if Cariaso will immediately take over, or only after his the Mixers win the title or get eliminated from the conference.

Best known for his stint as a player with the Alaska Milkmen, taking on Ginebra will be Cariaso’s first head coaching job.

Barangay Ginebra in recent conferences has been known for their inability to turn talented rosters into consistent winners. Most recently, the team barely cracked the quarterfinals of the Commissioner’s Cup, finishing with a 3-6 card. They were then dispatched by the undefeated Talk ’N Text Tropang Texters in the first round.

San Miguel Beer and Ginebra coaching changes in the past two years

The San Miguel Beermen and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings have been trying to find the winning formula. The SMB franchise has not won a PBA championship since they hoisted the 2011 Governors' Cup trophy. Ginebra on the other hand has not won a championship in six long years. A lot has happened in the past six conferences, specially in coaching, for the two teams and a lot more is bound to happen after they fell short again. This slideshow tracks the coaching changes done by the two teams.

(https://s.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/iDdr.NpEKqopxm1nwpBGNw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Y2g9NDMyO2NyPTE7Y3c9NTc2O2R4PTA7ZHk9MDtmaT11bGNyb3A7aD00MzI7cT03NTt3PTU3Ng--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2014-04-28/afa1b620-ceb5-11e3-af9b-af029402d386_ato-agustin-nuki-sabio-090211.jpg)

In his rookie conference in the PBA, Ato Agustin led the Petron Blaze Boosters to the 2011 PBA Governors' Cup title. But after an underwhelming campaign in 2012, he fell out of favor.

(https://s2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/ui.Xqo.NkZo5YBbbljDVWg--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD00Mzk7cT03NTt3PTU4OA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en-PH/News/philstar/863558.jpg)

The Boosters initially wanted former Gilas-Pilipinas head coach Rajko Toroman to handle the team but because of the rules barring foreigners from becoming new PBA head coaches, the franchise elevated Olsen Racela as head coach while hiring Toroman as team consultant. The Boosters essentially had two head coaches at one time.

(https://s1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/1rn6DGCgKO8o3cGUcsi24w--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD00ODk7cT03NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2013-04-07/571890f2-fae0-41d8-b01f-364fa1adf326_528337_639714966044942_1500631799_n.jpg)

The Rajko Toroman experiment did not last long for the Boosters as the team's veterans rejected his methods. In the end, the franchise took him out of the team and handed the reins completely to Racela. In a completely unrelated move, Toroman later found himself as a team consultant with Barako Bull.

(https://s3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/duG0ZtFkGBcoQGivybQR.w--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD00MjA7cT03NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2013-10-09/140ca61a-3421-47bf-a5c4-160912dac350_PBA-IMAGE2-11.jpg)

Racela looked like he was on his way to helping the Boosters make it to the Finals and possibly win a title in the 2013 PBA Commissioner's Cup but it all fell apart after Renaldo Balkman choked Arwind Santos. Gee Abanilla was named the new head coach with Racela moving to the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers as an assistant coach.

(https://s2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/TbmwkJrUWFbaJ_vNvRZKzw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD0zODc7cT03NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2014-03-10/f7465760-a827-11e3-b8d7-69d1f4c0bff3_20140305_NPPA_CBD-00170555.jpeg)

Abanilla fell painfully short of a title in the 2013 PBA Governors' Cup as his Boosters lost in a seven game series against the Mixers in the finals. After struggling in the 2014 Philippine Cup, Abanilla was replaced with Biboy Ravanes while Todd Purves was given a more active role in the bench, which means he is basically the head coach but it is against the rules to call him that. As of the moment, it seems like the two will be holding on to their spots even after an early exit for the Beermen.

(https://s3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/r4.3Chgp.W5.GdgHnK4nIw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Y2g9NDIzO2NyPTE7Y3c9NjM1O2R4PTA7ZHk9MDtmaT11bGNyb3A7aD00MjA7cT03NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2014-04-28/d93859a0-ceb8-11e3-9f07-0ba5106805eb_635x423xsiot-tangquincen-jpg-pagespeed-ic-M5379UG78t.jpg)

For Ginebra, Siot Tanquingcen was the head coach of the Kings up until the 2013 Philippine Cup but he had a cloud hanging over him the the name of Alfrancis Chua who stood as team consultant.

(https://s2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/Et5GGh2.wqSvkE9BHH_qgQ--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD00ODk7cT03NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2013-04-29/3d8b8f35-6691-4ebf-a59b-be3946a23c7a_428565_651228678226904_1915977320_n.jpg)

Alfrancis Chua was elevated to head coach from team consultant and Siot Tanquingcen was demoted to assistant heading into the 2013 Commissioner's Cup. After struggling with import Herbert Hill, Chua found gold in Vernon Macklin who carried them to a stint at the finals. Although it seemed like Ginebra finally got the perfect mix, the situation did not last long.

(https://s2.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/nN7Dc.55OSOqfBbTaTWOBg--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD00MTI7cT03NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2013-12-08/8aa441b2-7aab-469f-8c1a-23411e2cd53c_20131208_NPPA_CBD_00119710.jpg)

Things got really weird really fast for Ginebra as Chua resigned from his spot as head coach claiming there were people meddling with the the decision-making in Ginebra. This resulted to the transfer of a basketball official in the SMC group to another arm and the hiring of Ato Agustin as interim head coach. Chua returned to the team this time as a manager.

(https://s1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/iAyXHc02fMJ9_WQ2JAvU9Q--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7Zmk9aW5zZXQ7aD00MjA7cT03NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2014-03-10/c7750810-a82c-11e3-ad0d-25ef0c0e7670_20140307_NPPA_CBD-00170871.jpeg)

After being upgraded into a full time head coach instead of an interim one, Ato Agustin operated in the 2014 Philippine Cup with a former head coach beside him as team manager. Together they carried Ginebra to the top spot in the eliminations. However, this was not enough for the mangement as they shook things up again. Agustin retained the title of head coach but assistant coach Juno Sauler did the head coaching duties during games.

Immediately after the end of their Commissioner's Cup campaign, news broke out that Ginebra officials are already talking to current San Mig Super Coffee assistant coach Jeffrey Cariaso to be their next head coach. Will The Jet be the Kings' new coach? More importantly, will he end Ginebra's title drought? Only time will tell.

I think ginebra are doing just ok, nanalo, natatalo

Another disappointing conference for the Gin Kings.

May nabasa akong article na gusto ni Cariaso yung mga 2 way player who plays defense talaga and scores when needed. Probably 2 new players itry ma acquire ng Ginebra for the next season.

Tim Cone says Barangay Ginebra caught SMB at the right time
Rey Joble, InterAksyon.com · Monday, April 4, 2016 · 11:03 am

For Tim Cone, it was an opportune time for Barangay Ginebra to get one over San Miguel, one of the teams the Kings are chasing in the race for the top two spots in the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup standings.

San Miguel’s reigning back-to-back MVP June Mar Fajardo had just come back from an injury – a swollen knee – and only finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Another former MVP, Arwind Santos, made his return as well but was obviously not his usual self yet after taking time off following the passing of his mother.

Import Tyler Wilkerson, SMB’s high-scoring import who was averaging 36 points per game heading into the contest, was limited to 20 points on 6-for-16 shooting.

Taken all together, Cone felt it was just a bad night for the Beermen.

“We caught San Miguel right at the right time. June Mar just came back from injury, Arwind his bereavement, and Tubid just coming back. Their chemistry, their rotations. We caught them on our good night,” Cone told sportswriters.

Ginebra defeated San Miguel, 110-84, to make the playoff race more interesting.

Meralco still leads the standings with a 7-2 record. Alaska is running second at 6-3 while San Miguel (5-3) and Ginebra (6-4) are not far behind.

Cone credited his team’s effort in the crucial game, particularly on the defensive end.

“We got contributions all the way through, especially on the defensive side. If they’re scoring over a hundred points then we’re gonna lose,” added Cone, who challenged his team following their recent loss to Tropang TNT.

“We fell out of character in our last game. It was a really challenge to show our character and tonight we played with more desire.”

Ginebra keeps top 2 bid going, shuts down Meralco

pba images.

Barangay Ginebra assured itself of at least a spot in the Top Six while keeping a wafer-thin hope of sneaking into second place as the Gin Kings blasted the Meralco Bolts, 103-90, in the penultimate play date of the Oppo PBA Commissioner’s Cup elimination round at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Wednesday.

The Gin Kings stoked the fire of their huge win over the San Miguel Beermen the last time out, pulling off an equally dominant win over the Bolts to end their elims stint with a 7-4 win-loss record.

That slate guarantees Ginebra of at least a place from No. 3 to No . 6, meaning the Gin Kings will figure in best-of-three quarterfinals.

But the Kings can even salvage a playoff crack at No. 2 spot (and its reward of a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals) in case of a win by Tropang TNT over San Miguel Beer coupled by a victory by NLEX over Alaska Milk Friday.

In that eventuality, TNT, Ginebra, San Miguel and Rain or Shine end up with identical 7-4 slates. In such a case, the Texters and the Kings meet in a playoff for No. 2 on superior quotients.

With an 8-3 closing mark, the Bolts are winding up first or second. Whichever, they’re assured of the coveted advantage in the quarters – a first in franchise history.
Playing with a great sense urgency from the beginning, the Gin Kings led by 19 points early, 35-16, before settling for a 51-39 halftime spread.

Ginebra enjoyed double-digit spreads right in the opening quarter with LA Tenorio, Mark Caguioa and Greg Slaughter getting the team to a good start in the game.

Slaughter and Tenorio both had had double-digit outputs with 15 and 12 points, respectively, as they took the halftime break.

Chris Newsome and Cliff Hodge paced the Bolts with 11 and 10 markers in the first 24 minutes where the two imports were limited to just four apiece.

Rain or Shine sweeps Ginebra for semis berth

Based on its experience in the series opener Rain or Shine has braced itself for a drawn-out duel with Barangay Ginebra.

Jeff Chan and JR Quinahan led a group of Elasto Painters who had other plans.

Chan scored 22 points and Quinahan came off the bench to deliver 21 as Rain or Shine pulled off a 102-89 victory Tuesday that made short work of their Oppo-PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals matchup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With its followup to its come-from-behind 88-84 win last Sunday Rain or Shine thus completed a sweep of the best-of-three quarterfinals duel, one coach Yeng Guiao admitted was far from his mind.

“We didn’t expect to go 2-0 against Ginebra,” related Guiao. “We’re looking to go all the way to Game 3. I guess it’s our speed. We wanted it to be a fast-paced series. We know we’re not gonna beat them on a deliberate halfcourt game, which is their game.”

Maverick Ahanmisi also came up big with 13 points, all coming in the second half that saw the E-Painters stress their game-long dominance by leading by as much as 98-82, only 1:42 left.

“We played good d tonight,” assessed Guiao, whose team had to scramble back from an early 19-point deficit in the series opener.

“We tried to avoid the bad start we had the other game,” added Guiao. “We played excellent defense, especially in the second half. Everybody was hustling.”

As a result, Rain or Shine realized a ninth straight Final Four stint and will next meet the winner of the San Miguel Beer-Star pairing set to be decided Wednesday evening.

Ginebra, which entered the duel ranked a notch higher than its fifth-seeded foe, has now failed to advance past the quarterfinals in the last seven conferences and all because it could not keep pace with the up-tempo game Rain or Shine set from the start nor the latter’s torrid shooting.

Against the alternating leech-like defense of Gabe Norwood and Jireh Ibanes Othyus Jeffers still wound up with 27 points and 14 rebounds and all the Kings’ starters actually finished with at least 10 points.  But Guiao’s bench, spearheaded by Quinahan and Ahanmisi, routed its Ginebra counterpart 55-13.

Led by Chan’s four triples, the E-Painters also went 11-for-33 from beyond the arc to the Kings’ 3-for-17 and their 15-11 advantage in second chance points negated their four-point disadvantage in points in the paint.
In all, Ginebra made just 33 of 85 field goal attempts to Rain or Shine’s 41-for-87 clip.

“JR played another excellent game,” said Guiao. “He stepped up. He stopped the momentum of the other team. Maverick stepped up, Gabe and Jireh did a great job on the import. Jeffers had to bleed for his points,” said Guiao.

Pierre Henderson-Niles finished with only 10 points but had 14 rebounds, numbers enough to please Guiao.

“I am happy with our import. At least we’re not being dominated inside,” he said.

Ginebra’s towering frontline of Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar combined for 28 points and 16 rebounds, but they were often left lagging in transition and forced to take majority of their shots from the outside, with little success.

Rain or Shine had no such problems, racing to a 10-point lead as early as the first quarter and extending the difference to 15 points early in the fourth.

Ginebra actually found its touch from deep only in the final canto, with LA Tenorio’s triples sparking and capping an 11-3 burst that put the Kings within 77-86, still 6:26 left.

But Quinahan sank an off-balanced jumper and Ahanmisi drained two charities to push the lead back up to 13. When Chan returned, he promptly scored six points in an 8-2 run that made it an unassailable 98-82 count.

Ginebra showed growth despite another early exit, says import Jeffers

Published April 19, 2016 8:43pm
By MARISSE PANALIGAN, GMA News
(http://images.gmanews.tv/webpics/2016/04/640_othyus_jeffers_2016_04_19_20_41_30.jpg)
Barangay Ginebra suffered yet another early playoff exit after folding in two games against Rain or Shine in the quarterfinals of the Commissioner's Cup.

The Gin Kings, which impressed in the elimination round after finishing with a 7-4 card, fell 88-84 in the first game and then got blown out, 102-89, on Tuesday.

It was quite an anticlimactic turn of events for the crowd favorites, but import Othyus Jeffers said the team still achieved a lot despite the lack of playoff success.

"We made strides. We just broke down at the wrong time," said the former NBA player, who scored 27 points in Ginebra's losing effort in Game Two.

The Kings had a couple of standout performances in the elims, coming up with huge victories against league-leading squads San Miguel Beer and Meralco.

It was a tough luck that they drew the Elasto Painters in the quarters, though, as the team is intimately acquainted with Tim Cone's triangle offense.

"(Yeng Guiao) has a couple of conferences to defend it against other teams. His past teams is very educated with the triangle," Jeffers said.

But the undersized import remains positive that Ginebra will grow next conference, where he is expected to reprise his role as the team's import in the Governors' Cup.

"We grew a lot from the first game to the last," he said. "Again, it's still new to us and we're still learning." —JST, GMA News
